I just bought it this Wednesday, and am now at the beginning of Leaf By Niggle (I would have probably finished it by now if I had more time). Who else has read it? What do you think?

I loved Farmer Giles of Ham. It was such a change to read a different style of Tolkien's! Enjoyable, really kept me reading until I absolutely couldn't keep my eyes open. And I love the way Tolkien portrays dragons--Smaug, etc. ^^

The Adventures of Tom Bombadil was quite different. Very interesting to see all those verses...especially liked The Shadow-Bride and The Last Ship...Tolkien...wow.

I seem very vague today, don't I? :P

I just discovered this thread and I was wondering if anybody else had read the book "Tales from the Perilous Realm".. I've just re-read and I was wondering what you guys think about it. I really like it (since I got my username from one of the poems in there :-D). My favourite story in the book is Leaf by Niggle I would say, but I also like the others. And I also quite like some of the poems (obviously.. *grins*). So yeah... what do you think??

I love Tales from the Perilous Realm... I read it under the title "Poems and Stories" and for a while didn't know the difference. It's actually been a while since I read it, though, it was about *counts on fingers* 11 months ago.

But I remember I liked it.

Yeah exactly, go Tolkien!! :-D I particularly like the poem "The last ship" (of course...), but I think each of the poems has something special about it which is why I like them so much.

well yeah, you really should read it. Tales from the Perilous realm consists of 4 parts of which 3 are stories and the 4th is a collection of short poems. From one of those poems I actually got my username Fíriel. The 3 stories are called Farmer Giles of Ham, Smith of Wooden Mayor and Leaf by Niggle. They all are quite short stories and very nice. The stories don't have anything to do with each other. So yeah..

Heh--I haven't read that. I've read Farmer Giles of Ham and Leaf by Niggle in The Tolkien Reader, but I have not read Tales from the Perilous Realm.

well, as I said, it really is worth reading. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (the poems) are really cool. Of course I like the one best where I got my username from :-D

I haven't read them--I read The Tolkien Reader before the movies came out, and I was nine at the time, and so failed to realize what an awesome character Tom Bombadil was, so I didn't read those poems. And now I don't know where the book is. :annoyed2:

oh, that's no good. Well most of the poems aren't about Tom Bombadil actually. The collection is just called "the adventures of Tom Bombadil", they contain lots of different poems. One of them is the Oliphaunt poem.

Leaf by Niggle is cute. It's about this artist who's quest is to paint the perfect leaf.
