One of the best chapters in Unfinished Tales is 'The Battles of the Fords of Isen' where the strategy of the Rohirrim's defense is discussed, the death of Theodred, and the lack of a unifying strong leader after his death. When I read Lord of the Rings and I get to the Rohan part, I read this chapter along with the book. It fills in a lot in that part.

The Mariner's wife was a good read to gain insight into life of Numenoreans. It was a sad tale though as it was an estranged marriage and part of the tragedy that is Numenor.

The Gladden Fields is a great part as well. Good battle tactics even though Isildur's men were overrun. I agree with Aerandir.Isildur showed his meddle and knew he had made the wrong decision when he took the Ring as an heirloom.

I'm in the middle of The Mariner's Wife, and I have to say, it's very different. Any thoughts?

This was a very interesting tale even though it is rather tragic in the end. It gives the best glimpse into life of Numenoreans and their settlements in Middle Earth and such. Overall, it was a tale of a bad marriage. Maybe Aldarion and Erendis should have not gotten married?
