Post subject: | Balrogs Wings - An ongoing debate |
Ok, so I was reading about Balrogs in The Encyclopedia of Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/) and It seems that whether or not Balrogs actaully have wings is a topic for real debate. Personally, I can't decide. To begin with, it seems that from this sentance - "...suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall..." that Tolkien ment for the Balrog to be interpreted as having wings, but then, if it DID have wings, why did it bother to run all the way up the Endless Stairs rather than just flying? So, what do you think, and why? |

Well, since balrogs are just evil Maiar who assumed the shape, maybe they just added wings to make them look bigger. I don't know. |

But you see it never actually SAYS that Balrogs have wings - he could be just speaking figuritively. |

hmmm. Persoanlly i think No. I mean, he never actaully says that they do, and if they did, why don't they use them? |

That's true... I mean they don't use them, I don't know if it is ever said in any book, I've never read it in any of the books I've got... |

The only way for both to be true: that the balrog had wings but did not choose to use them, is either that their wings are inoperable or that for some reason, he refrained from using them. I consider these to be the only explanations, short of a discontinuity in the story, which I automatically disregard. What does everyone think? |

Like I said before, A giant firery winged beast is a heck of a lot scarier than just a plain firery beast. I beth the Maiar did it for intimidation. |

That is what I said; the Balrog may have just had inoperable wings. |

I'm gonna stick to my answer. NO they don't, the shadow just appears like it. I'm sticking to it. Although I've been asked this before the movie too. It was contraversy when the book was out also. |

Well, I think the balrog has wings, but since they're made of shadow and flame, they probably can't fly. ![]() |

^ That's what I think as well. It is stone and fire, so most likely the wings are for intimidation, not actually flying. |

You bring up a very good point there. Wings could have existed for intimidation not nessersarily flying. I highly recommend this debate thread: http://tolkienforums.activeboard.com/index.spark?forumID=77580&p=3&topicID=7364359&subForumID=253352&topicPage= It is a very good basis for you to decide what you think is right. |
