It's kind of a prequel to the LotR... It explains how the world was created (according to Tolkien) and the great legends of Arda which are oftenly mentionned in the trilogy...

What to say except that it's a "must have" for every tolkien fan! It's not easy to start, a bit complicated, but once you're in it, you can't get out of it! :P lol!

I hope you'll enjoy it! ;)

The Sil tells ths history of what is now considered Valinor and Middle-earth. It starts with the Valar creating the world (Ages of Creation) and ends with the War of Wrath ending thr First Age of the Sun. There is also a part of the Akallabeth (tells the tale of the Downfall of Numénor; very interesting) and another part on the Ring of Power and the Ringbearers.

You might find it confusing the beginning (it has extensive details on genealogy which eluded me the first time I read) but it's a must read if you want to know all about Middle-earth!

As soon as you get a copy you must read it! It's pretty much the back story to the LotR Trilogy. It covers everything from the begining of Arda when it was created by Iluvatar and the Valar to the forging of the Rings of Power and beyond depending on the book you have. Enjoy! :)

Yeah, it's a great book, one any Tolkien fan must read. Basically, it's about the First Age of Middle -Earth, and what happened. There is also lots about what happened before then, the forming of Arda, the time of the Two Trees, and the coming of the elves. Just to put it differently to those before me. But it's definately worth a read, and don't give up on it. It may be a struggle in the beginning, but it's rewarding if you get through it. :)

I found it easier to read the Silm the first time after having read the other four and then on further rereadings, I was able to read the books chronologically, but at first it gets very confusing with all the characters and I didn't catch Gandalf's Silm cameo until I read about it somewhere else!

The Silmarillion is the best book I've ever read. I agree with what people said before and you really should read it :)
