I can't seem to remember if Gandalf [Olorin] was mentioned in The Silm. Was he actually there? |

Well... he was very briefly mentioned when it was spoken abour the Maiar... But he was not an actually active character. His story in ME started in the Third age. I think this makes sense. |

So, he got mentioned meaning he was alive then, but he didn't have a prominent story line? Just trying to get this straight... ![]() |

Yup, he was there, but didn't have much (or anything) to do with the main happenings in Middle-earth until the Third Age, when the Istari arrived at the Grey Havens. |

Here's from Wikipedia which I remember is correct... Gandalf was the best-known of the Maiar of Valinor, a servant of the Valar, the Powers of the world, and of Eru Ilúvatar, the One. In Valinor he was known as Olórin, and was said to be the wisest of the Maiar. He dwelt in the gardens of Irmo and was the pupil of Nienna. When the Valar decided to send the order of the Wizards to Middle-earth in order to counsel and assist all those who opposed Sauron, Olórin was proposed by Manwë. In the Order, he had a strained, competitive relationship with Saruman, its head. |

As far as I remember he was mentioned in Valaquenta, like has already been said, when the Valar and Maiar were mentioned and their powers described. Thus Gandalf (Olórin) is mentioned as being a Maia of the house of Manwë and Varda. |

Come on guys you need quotes: "Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin. He too dwelt in Lórien, but his ways took him often to the house of Nienna, and of her he learned pity and patience." This is all that is known of Gandalf prior to the Third age and the quest of the Istari. |

And when quoting you need references to page and book! lol It's very true Lord of all, ideally we need to give quotes to go with an argument. My excuse was that I don't have an English copy of the Sil right with me. Very pathetic, I know ![]() My (possibly bad!) memory still tells me he is mentioned in I think the ending of Valaquenta... and it says that he serves Manwë and Varda. I'll try to find out. |

Yes you are indeed correct. Olorin served manwe and Varda, though he often dwelt in lorien with Nienna. He often also spent much time amoungt the Elves of Valinor invisible and they wondered as he passed as it seemed happiness was walking amoungt them. |

In the Silmarillion, though possibly in Unfinished tales. No in fact I beleive the latter the more likely. |
