Please note that bashing of either character is not aloud.

What are some differences that you note between the kings Theoden and Denethor? They can be about how they act, treat others around them, rule their country, etc. Please don't just say Theoden is good and Denethor is evil.

Both Theoden and Denethor were somehow made ill [either internally or externally] by the works of Saruman and Sauron. Grima poisoned Theoden's mind as a means to overtake the country of Rohan, and Sauron used the Palantir to show Denethor terrible things which caused him to lose hope and faith in himself and his country.

Fortunately, Theoden was rid of his "sickness" and was able to lead his people to victory. But, Denethor refused to believe that what Sauron was showing him was a lie, and in the end he kind of went made.

Both of their sons were dead. It is only similarity they have in common

I think Denethor is almsot a King of the greatest nation of Men in Middle-Earth and it goes to his head a little bit, and along with Sauron's lies and the death of his wife. He's a little insane. Whereas Theoden was a perfectly normal King of the pretty normal kingdom of Rohan, with a son and a niece and nephew and then *poof* along comes Grima and Saruman and things just start to go wrong. I also think that Denethor was in much deeper than Theoden. One similarity, though - they were both deceived by evil and it was, in Denethor's case, fatal, and almost in Theoden's.

Well....some similarties are they had a hobbit in their services. As many people said before, both of them are rulers of a great human kingdom but was deceived by evil. Both of them were confronted about this by Gandalf but only Theoden heeded Gandalf's words while Denethor just totally lost his marbles.

I think the biggest difference between those two was that Theoden didn't fall into dispair, but listened to what Gandalf said while Denethor was too ignorant and so he commited suicide. Of course their personalities are also very different, because Theoden is quite friendly while Denethor is ignorant and arrogant. But a similarity is that both of them also lost their wives.

They have similarities, for they both have lost their wife and their son, they both didn't actually want to become evil, they just had a bad influence (Grima and Sauron). But they are also very different in their characters.
