But Felarof, Elves do not normally leave the Circles of the World when they die, but (in general) are restored to physical life.

The idea of Elven 'reincarnation' (although I've simplified it here) was part of the scenario when Tolkien was a young writer, and he never changed this. He changed how the Elves could be restored to physical life, but not that they could be, and were.

Death was not a problem here. However the ban on the Noldor was -- but Tolkien got around that, and had Glorfindel restored to his body (an exact if new version), and had him return to Middle-earth in the Second Age.

Ok, thanks for the correction.

I should add that, once again Tolkien himself didn't actually publish these two late essays about Glorfindel. But he also didn't publish The Silmarillion himself, so...

Material published by the author himself: one Glorfindel (of Rivendell)

Posthumously published material: one Glorfindel (of Gondolin and later Rivendell)

Or at least that's how I think it goes :-D

There just happened to be a long gap in time before Silmarillion readers found out about the late essays. And a gap in time between Tolkien publishing The Lord of the Rings and Tolkien much later sitting down to really try and answer the question for himself.

Or something. Some don't seem to accept the late essays for some reason.
