Post subject:  Forum and Site Status ~ 2017

I am curious about the long term stability of this forum and site. It seems that it is one of the more stable Tolkien sites of this century, not getting the hack attacks so many others have suffered, or had board software issues that so many other have had. I know there has been talk ever since I joined in 2007 about some sort of 'revival' which but for some brief periods of activity, always seems to fade away. But a core of folk seem to stay and some visit on occasion.

I was considering moving some of my story fics and RPs here as a repository and even some for active development, being it seems so stable. I am just curious what the status of the domain and hosting is, as this does cost money. I don't want to put a lot of effort into moving tales here only to come to the site one day to find the domain has expired and all is lost, like what has happened to some others.

I guess I would like to know what plans are in place going forward by those who host and maintain this site being that traffic is an nth of what it once was during the hey day of the first decade of this century.

In the words of Aragorn... "What say you?"

Now that it's 2017 and things are going well here. Happy New Year Everyone!
I have taken a more active role in participation, and have made about a quarter of my total posts for the 9 years I have been a part of this site in the last year.
Maybe half in the last three, and half in the first six.

I do hope this place remains, and hope the new year finds everyone well and happy.

I have started integrating my tales into the Story Forum, and making a reliable back-up archive just in case.

If any of the administrators and active moderators are here lurking, please let yourself be known and maybe give us a 'Site Status' report?

Regards,
Hanasian,
Dunedain Ranger #26

Well, you are unlikely to get a response from the mods or Arwen herself, but it times past I have inquired about similar issues and I have always been told that as long as people are still coming to the forum (even if only a few) there forum will never be shut down.

Arwen the Web miss pays to keep it open and last I heard, even though she has little or no time to visit or maintain/upgrade she has no intent of closing it down.

Yeah, I figured it was that way. I do worry about absentee site owners as they tend to let it drift away. I may go ahead and chance it anyway. It would just be nice to know that all is well.

Yeah, I hear ya. I've contacted the Web miss a couple times personally through facebook for those concerns exactly. She generally gets back to me... though sometimes it's months before she does. lol

She has always assured me that this site will always be here as long as there is activity but I completely understand your concerns and share them as well.

I had bunches of poems on this site and a year back I went through them all (Which took a long time) and saved the ones to my computer harddrive that I wanted to be sure I never lost. I intended to put them on a jump drive but I ended up puttign them on Google drive. I feel like it is a pretty stable option for storage.

It seems there is only you, Boromir, and Me here regular now anyway. I see a few others post here and there, but not regular.

Agreed though Evilsheildmaiden, Gersemi and Thranduil pop in fairly often.

Yup, those three and us three... that's pretty much the regular crowd.

It's too bad, really.... :( This place was a bustling busy forum back in it's day and I've tried so many things for revival all to no avail. With the popularity of forums gone and Tolkien's down as well from what it was during the movie hype... it's just hard to get people to move from the more "Conventional" social media into an old school forum setting.

I'm not sure why... I feel like most of the social media groups like facebook and google + etc... really lack a lot of experience and content compared to a forum.

I check AU daily and post rather often too, but I think it has become clear that there's not enough interest in general to revive the forums.

Yeah... Sadly true. :( Again I honestly don't understand. I still think forums are much better than other social media sites.

Does anyone know what happened to the Hi Resolution stills in the gallery section? I figure it's ok to post this question here since it says site status.

I think forums in general are a dying trend. We're in the age of social media and fast responses now, rather than walls of text. It's as though everyone is always in a hurry. I still frequent (as in, read, but rarely post) a few notable and rather popular forums that have been thriving for over 10-15 years, but most forums that were once popular have been deserted. Also, technology like mobile phones and tablets have soared in popularity; technology that just wasn't around when this forum - and most forums - were popular. People (myself included) seem to prefer spending most of their time online on portable devices like those, rather than computers. It might be worth noting that most forums I frequent that still have high traffic are all mobile-friendly.... that could be a huge factor as well.

@ Boromir I have no idea... :/ I would not have even noticed the absence probably.

@ Aredhel Yeah, the fast paced aspect of life certainly doesn't help the forum world. There are some new RP forums I came across, though, that are growing in a few months to nearly 500 members. There are still a lot of role players out there who like the forum setting but as you say these are mobile friendly sites which certainly helps. Honestly, though, I do most of my posting here on AU from my phone.

Just wanted to pop by and say thank you to the people who are still keeping this forum alive.

Aredhel summed up the general forum situation pretty accurate. People have much faster means of communication nowadays. I find it kind of sad though - because forums offer a different kind of social interaction, which I honestly prefer compared to the "instant" social media. I've noticed that the chat room on the main page is pretty active though.

Yes, I too much prefer the forum. I honestly don't understand the draw to most of the other media out there.

Happy New Year 2017 Everyone!
As this is my 9th Anniversary of my coming to this site,
I resolved to try and not be such a curmudgeon here this year.
My apologies for my past crankyness.
I hope I haven't put anyone off.
Now, let's get this year started!
