Mugglenet.com has just posted that Deathly Hallows directing candidate, Guillermo del Toro will not be directing the final HP film because he has been slated to make The Hobbit. Does anyone know anything about this?

He's worked a lot with Alfonso Cauron, and is well known for directing the Hellboy series and being the producer of Pan's Labyrinth. It even says he going to direct The Hobbit on IMDB...

Can we get an official press release or something? This is making me uneasy.

I'm pretty sure he is directing the Hobbit. He knows both Fran and PJ quite well, and he adores the Hobbit, and most film critics who are genuinley interested in who makes the Hobbit, have said he would be the best director to do it after PJ, because he knows them and understands what making the Hobbit will require.

I'm going to say he will be announced as the director of the Hobbit before long.

I'm just afraid that this isn't really his style. I mean, he's just come out of making Pan's Labyrinth and I'm positive another movie in the Hellboy series is in the works as well. The Hobbit just seems so... different for him. *shrug*

I am REALLY happy about this. I love the look his films have (Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy II being the prime examples), and have no doubt that he can pull it off. His style is so different from Jackson's, which brings a bunch of excitement to this.

Don't kill me for this, but I think I like it better than the idea of Jackson directing. To me, the Hobbit has always felt like it would look lot darker and more surreal than LotR, which is something he does well. As long as he keeps at least some of the iconic visual elements from LotR, like the design of Bag End, Gollum, etc, I'll be fine with other changes. I'm especially excited to see what he does with the giant spiders and dungeons of Mirkwood, Laketown, The Lonely Mountain and SMAUG.

This is such good news. *Cries with joy* I CANNOT WAIT.

We won't kill you... we'll just string you up by your ankles and tickle you till you beg for death... and then we'll just be doing you a small favour.

I myself am a big fan of Hellboy (even if the metal faced man wearing a Nazi hat freaked me out) and as I don't really know his other films, I'm happy to be guided by what other people say. If practically everyone thinks he will do a good job, and the fact PJ is still going to be majorly involved - and it's been reported that Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen have jumped at the chanc to be in the Hobbit - then I'm not too worried. PJ is involved and two critical cast members will be back.

*pats timx4 on the head*

True, true. I've only seen Pan's Labyrinth, and though I thought it was fantastically made, it just seems like such a far cry from The Hobbit. Anyway, timx4 did bring up some very good points concerning the overall mood of the film, which will definitely fit del Toro's style [in my opinion of course]. As long as we've got some familiar faces I think I'll be okay. And it's not like PJ isn't involved at all... :duh:

I do hope they bring Howard Shore back for the score as well. He did a fantastic job and it would really help connect these 2 movies to the trilogy.

Yeah I really hope so, too. Since I really luuv music, the soundtrack always was a very important part of the movies for me (if not the most important part..) and so I'd really love to see Howard Shore do the soundtrack for the Hobbit as well.

Christopher Lee has apparently agreed to reprise his role.

As for Guillermo, I'm not going to go on my usual tirade about the similarities between now (Del Toro/Hobbit) and then (Jackson/LotR). Last I heard things were remaining as close to the chest as possible till the WGA strike was over. Now it is...I guess time will tell.

I guess he really wants to do the hobbit. I heard for certain he's going to do it.

There should some sort of announcement by around Wednesday. Like we don't already know it's Guillermo lol. Still it's good to have it official and hopefully things will start to move quickly and things like casting will start to filter through.

I'm very excited, Del Toro is a wonderful director. I can't be happier about the prospects of him helming the Hobbit movie(s). They are in very safe hands.

And it's not like PJ is not going to be involved in the process! I am very excited. Is it 2010 yet? :D
