I say 2011, because I think that is the absolute latest it's going to be. I originally hear 2009 for The Hobbit and then 2010 for the next film, but if they won't even start casting until '09, I can't see The Hobbit being out in the same year.

I agree. And I think that Ideally the first movie will be 2011 and the second 2012. Realistically :P Either way I will be ancient!

 WHAT? Tom Hollander as Bilbo...oh that would be amazing! I can just picture Beckett in a Bilbo costume... seriously. that's probably all I would be seeing when I saw The Hobbit. :innocent: :P but it would be great. And I guess I can envision him as Bilbo... er, maybe. ;) But I've heard James McAvoy... and I think he would be brilliant for the role, personally. Both actors are good.

anyway, 2011...? gee, it's so far away... but it's realistic, I suppose.

I still stand by my choice of Martin Freeman.
I've not really thought of anyone else since I began to consider movie casting. I have faith in GDT and whoever gets the part, will be right for it.

I remember back when casting news was coming out for LotR's..and this is as nerve wracking.

I like the idea of James McAvoy. He's a serious actor, not too young, and he can do fantasy. Plus, he's Scottish and looks very hobbit-y to me.

Tom Hollander would be awesome, too. I admit, I can't quite see him as a hobbit, but I would love to see Beckett and Mr. Collins as Bilbo.

Dan Radcliffe... I don't know. I make a point of not seeing the later Harry Potter movies so I don't know how he's developing as an actor, but I think he's too young and too Harry Potter to play Bilbo.

Not Radcliffe, please not Radcliffe! Hollander would be good, but for me Freeman or McAvoy would be wonderful choices, but you never know which way PJ and GDT will go.

But McAvoy, he's known to Narnia fans and I think he was in The Fraternity? But he's a brilliant actor, he really can disappear into a role, from watching Narnia, I would never, never have guessed that he was an American bikey!

But I have faith in PJ and GDT, and Fran and Phillipa of course! Doesn't Holm have cancer? And that's the reason he can't do the role?

^ He was treated for prostate cancer a couple years ago, and as far as I know, he's doing fine. Still, he'll be eighty in 2011, before the movie's even due, and that's very old to be doing all the stuff Bilbo has to do!

I also heard Jack Black recently. That, I cannot see. I supposed if he was picked, PJ would know what he's doing, having worked with him already before, but still... a comedian playing our beloved Bilbo?! Never. Anyway, it sort of sounds more like Hollywood gossip than actual news, or at least that's what I keep telling myself. :P

Rowan Atkinson supposedly said he'd already been approached and accepted, but I'm pretty sure that was another April Fools' joke. :teehee:

Apologies for the double post, but there's news!
http://the-hobbit-movie.com/2009/07/17/ ... gins-role/

It's just a rumor, but I could definitely see it, although I would hope he puts on weight for the role.

hmmm, I thought there was "big casting news" that was supposed to be released today... :erm: haven't heard anything yet. Last I heard, however, it was, yes, David Tennant or James McAvoy... personally, I'm rooting for McAvoy but that's just me. :P

Now they're talking about Tobey Maguire... which was quite a surprise for me, but once you get used to the thought.... I might like it. Still, Spidey as Bilbo is a bit weird. And he looks a tad bit like Elijah Wood, so I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

But it might just work out. :P

I heard that, but he's debunked it since. The rumor started because he said he'd like to work with del Toro. He wouldn't be a bad choice, although... I don't know... I think he's too intense and serious to play Bilbo.

I don't think it would be possible, seeing as Spider-Man 4 is due to start filming next year. He can't do both at the same time and he's already contractually bound to Spider-Man.

Still..I wasn't offended by the idea of it.

I think James McAvoy is looking less and less likely. There's a wide-spread rumor he's going to star in a bio-pic about the creator of James Bond, and he's got a lot of other films lined up besides. He just won't have time!

David Tennant is definitely my next choice... in fact, the more I think about it, he might be my first choice.

Gah! I wish I knew who!
