I like Richard Armitage. A lot. CANNOT for the life of me see him as a Dwarf. He's just too young and too handsome and beardless. I don't know any of the others really - very strange Dwarf casting I think..

I have faith in PJ, and no doubt they will all be fine, but at the moment I'm wondering how they heck they cast them.

That was exactly my reaction.

This just occurred to me, though. These dwarves will have a much larger role than John Rhys-Davies had as Gimli, and they'll spend much more time filming and have to do many things that Gimli didn't. Since it takes so much make-up and armor to play a dwarf, maybe they needed to cast young guys who are strong enough to stand being in all that the whole day. Just a theory. :)

So excited about Martin Freeman! I don't really know his work all that well, but I've heard many great things about him and I can't think of anyone better so I'm happy to jump on this band wagon. :P
Did anyone see what PJ said about him?

Sir Peter Jackson wrote:
Despite the various rumours and speculation surround this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us. There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave–- exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit.

Sounds great! :D

Mmm, I dunno how I feel about the cast either. Taur made a brilliant point concerning age, and I think that's exactly why they decided to cast younger blokes. At the same time I feel like I know next to nothing about any of the cast. I've seen Martin Freeman in The Office and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and of course I know of Richard Armitage, but otherwise . . . Anyway, it's all going to be rather interesting if you ask me.

So happy when I saw the New Zealand news. It's finally all coming together. New Zealand couldn't afford not to have it there.

I wonder why is it taking so long to get Sir Ian signed up. And what about Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, and Andy Serkis?? I always thought they'd be the first ones announced after Bilbo, but maybe they're still working out the film schedule and such. :erm: I'm just a little worried because before the greenlight I started reading that Sir Ian might not be able to do it if the delays continue. :( He wouldn't do that to us, though... would he?

Hmm... that is a puzzle. I know Ian McKellen was saying earlier this year that he was about to go to NZ to start filming... but obviously things changed and that never happened. Perhaps everyone just presumed that he and Serkis were signed up already, which now makes the fact that aren't seem suspicious. The rumour about Ian McKellen is from July, so I suspect if he really couldn't do it, by now, with many months more delays since, we'd have heard about it. He did an interview in October and while saying he was not under contract, he wouldn't say anything about whether he had been to any meetings.

I would take that silence to mean a yes, because if he really wasn't going to be Gandalf, why should anyone stop him from saying so?

I certainly hope Ian gets to stay as Gandalf. Same with Andy and the others. Fingers crossed I guess. :)

In other returning people news:

Not like it wasn't really up in the air, but still I'm stoked. Makes me almost more excited for the soundtracks than the movies.

^ Hurray!!! I'm really looking forward to seeing Cate as Galadriel again. :D

We can has Sir Ian nao plz?! ;)

Deadline.com says Orlando is going to come back as Legolas. I can't say this makes me totally unhappy. :P After all, it makes some sense within the story! I do hope they don't make a huge deal out of him, though. It would be a nightmare if they did something like create a romance around him. :duh:

I wonder if that is completely true... as much as I love Orlando Bloom and Legolas I don't think his part is really needed for more than a few moments of screen time.

He isn't even mentioned in the Hobbit, only Thranduil is, so the only moments I can see OB/Leggy is during scenes with Thranduil.

It will be interesting to see how they play out the Mirkwood scenes because those are some of my favorites... I do love my Woodland Elves <3

With the story being so much expanded, I can easily imagine a fairly involved role for him. :) The rumor is he'll be leading part of the elf army in the Battle of the Five Armies, which isn't so far-fetched. And I think I'd rather them bring Legolas back from LotR than make up a new character. It'll be really interesting to see Legolas in his natural habitat, too. :P

You've convinced me, I am feeling a bit better about this. That sounds strange coming from me that I am weary about Legolas... What is the world coming too

Anyway I am interested in seeing how much the film is going to differentiate from the novel...
