So, Peter Jackson just posted the following on facebook:

Quote:
I'm very pleased to be welcoming two new cast members to our team.

Dean O'Gorman will be playing Fili. Dean's a terrific Kiwi actor, who I am thrilled to be working with. He's recently been in an excellent TV series down here called "The Almighty Johnsons", and I should let fans of that show know that our shooting schedule allows Dean to continue with a second series next year. Dean will be joining us next week.

I'm also pleased to announce that Lee Pace will be playing the Elven King Thrandruil. Casting these Tolkien stories is very difficult, especially the Elven characters, and Lee has always been our first choice for Thrandruil. He's going to be great. We loved his performance in a movie called "The Fall" a few years ago, and have been hoping to work with him since. When we were first discussing who would be right for Thrandruil, Lee came into mind almost immediately.

It's been a great week, and I'm looking forward to the next few. It's going to be interesting ...

More soon.

Cheers,

Peter J

WHAT???

Now, I can't say I've seen The Fall, but I have seen Mr Pace in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and Pushing Daisies, and I cannot for the life of me picture him as Thranduil. I always pictured someone more like Jason Isaacs (sort of Lucius-Malfoy-y) for the role. Yes, I trust PJ, but...this caught me off guard.

Thoughts?

Oh.. I just realise I've never pictured Thranduil until now... :teehee: and he definitely does not look like the guy from Pushing Daisies..!! He does actually look more like Lucius Malfoy or an angrier version of Celeborn.
Looking forward to see some pictures of him all dressed up with pointy ears and elven wig and shiny bling. :P

And WITHOUT the Robert Pattinson eyebrows! I mean...not without eyebrows entirely, because that's Brad Dourif's thing, but you know what I'm trying to say :-P

I've never really thought about Thranduil either, and while I've not seen any of Lee Pace's movies, I'll have to say that from the picture I've got to say that Jason Isaacs strikes me as a much better choice. But like you said, Arwen, PJ can be trusted :)

:swoon: :swoon: :swoon:

I ADORE Lee Pace. I loved Pushing Daisies and The Fall, and he's such a great actor that it's always made me sad that mostly only done small supporting roles since then. (I mean, good Lord, the poor guy is in Twilight now!)

Honestly, I'm having a little bit of trouble seeing it as well, but then I haven't seen Soldier's Girl yet, where he got rave reviews for playing a transvestite. I think if he can pull that off, he can do probably do anything. ;)

So, in Taur-land, at least, this is just about the best casting possible, short of Gerard Butler playing Beorn. :teehee:

Oh, but I hope they keep his eye color consistent. It always bugs me how Orlando's change. :P

That's an interesting piece of casting. And sort of a hard one to picture as Thranduil - but I love Lee Pace. And I trust teh PJ. Bring on the pointy ears and shiny bling!

So I was stalking browsing TORn's forums to see what fans were saying about the casting, and someone posted this picture of Mr Pace:

And I have to say, at least here I can see a bit of an Elvish look about him. At least he doesn't look like the adorably dorky pie-maker.

I think I can see the Elvenking look about him! Without the stubble but with long, flowing hair. I haven't seen any of his work but like you all say, if PJ trusts him, I am not too worried. :D

He has that frown line in the middle of his forehead that PJ seems to like in his Elven lords (minus Legolas).

I haven't seen Lee Pace in anything but as far as looks go he's spot on for me, I was so worried about them casting Thranduil wrong (all those David Tennant Rumors made me nervous) So I'm really happy.
