Wow, I definitely was not thinking about a Smauglock ship! I agree, that does seem like people are taking things a bit too far. I'm just glad they got great actors for the parts.

I think I just end up seeing the deranged extremities of the fandom that say strange things regarding Benedict and Martin. Actually, the one I find more insulting than misinformed ships is when people say "I'm only going to see the movie for Benedict and Martin, I think the plot is stupid." I mean, I know these people will see the light once they actually watch the film, but at least if that's why you're seeing it, don't announce it to the Tolkien fans.
... I feel like I'm such a cranky fan, but... it's not too unreasonable to be annoyed by these things, right?

Well, to each their own, I guess. However, for me personally, it does seem silly to go to the movie just because these two actors are in it. And, as I see it, fans are allowed a certain degree of crankiness, so don't worry about that.
