Hello, all. I think one of the coolest scenes in FotR has got to be the whole Mines of Moria sequence. It's all pretty intense...
And the most touching scene is the end where Frodo decides to leave and Boromir dies. When Sam starts saying his "I made a promise..." lines I always get at least a little teary eyed.

I love those scenes!
Coolest: The Actiony ones.
Mines of Moria, mostly
Most touching:
When Frodo decides to take the ring
Gandalf and Frodo taking in the Mines
Sam and Frodo at the end.

In the mines of Moria, just like you. But I also feel the scene with Frodo and Sam towards the end is very emotional. I love it.

I completely and totally agree. I think I actually cried at that scene - and the music is really powerful, too.

Yeah, that's true. That's one of my favourite songs. It's so sad, though. I can never watch Return of the King because I always get teared up from about Aragorn's coronation on to the end of the movie. *sniff sniff*

Touching? I think when Sam decides to go with Frodo. Coolest? Aragorn fighting the ring wraiths.

Ánië Súrion wrote: Do you mean the most touching scene from just FOTR? For me that's probably the scene directly after Gandalf dies, or perhaps the scene where Boromir is talking to Aragorn on his deathbed. The actors pulled those off so incredibly well and the scenes didn't feel too cheesy or melodramatic at all. I read a Viggo interview in a movie magazine after Fellowship was out where spoke about the Boromir dying scene. He said they worked on the dying scene through the morning doing different takes and such, and they finally had it good and were in the moment and really getting it right and wanted to complete the scene. But after a cut close to the end of the scene, PJ said it was time for lunch . Viggo and Sean then had to pick it up for the last bit after lunch. I re-watched the movie in a theatre after I read that, and I have to say the quality acting of Sean and Viggo made it nearly seamless. Viggo said it was really hard to get that mood back after lunch and had several takes of one of them busting out laughing Quality acting and sub-par directing. PJ could have delayed lunch to finish the scene while the actors were 'in the zone', but PJ's appetite trumped that. Hats off to Sean and Viggo for making it as good as it was!
So.. getting on to the topic... (based on the EE as that is the only version I ever watched since obtaining the DVDs when they were first released well over a decade ago)
Most Touching: Aragorn singing the Lay of Luthien. The Boromir death scene is right behind it. Coolest: When Aragorn...Strider takes a drag on his pipe and the glow lights his hooded face. That was right out of the book!

Hmm.... Tough choice. I think the most touching would probably have to be Sam and Frodo in breaking of the fellowship. And for coolest, I would have to agree with Hanasian: Strider's opening shots with the hood and the pipe give me chills every time!
