For me, they represent the innocence of the world, shown by the four hobbits in the Fellowship - they shouldn't have been there, they shouldn't have been brought into the war or their lifestyles threatened, but they were.

Now, when I think of hobbits in the Shire, I can see that. However, once they get out of the Shire, they have potential to change the world. So, in a way I agree with Tolkien (I probably should.. considering he wrote the books.), but, in another way, I see hobbits representing someone who is wanting to stick to themselves, but, once released, they find out they can be a whole lot more than what they ever thought.

I quite like the idea of Hobbits like Lobelia Sacville-Bagging - showing that no race is perfect (:

I also think that the likes of Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry represent me. Never obiding by the uniformity in society !

I think that they might represent the most unlikely people, like those who really no one is interested in looking at. Heh in this case those people that were the least interesting to the Giant Folk anyways, made a difference.
I have always thought that Tolkien put them there to say that even the msallest person can make a difference. That's what I have always thought, do not judge someone by it's cover, that's all I think ^^
