Glorfindel!! Arwen knocked him out and stole his horse. What an incredibly unkind thing to do.. haha

haha

You can see why they used Arwen if they introduced another character in the middle of the action who isn't going to be a key character affecting the fellowship in some way it'd be confusing for people who have never read the books.

That does make sense... I kind of would have liked to see Glorfindel, though... *shrugs*

But yeah, people who have not read the books or know about the m to some extent I can see how they would be a little lost as to who he is and all... *shrugs*

I have nothing bad to say about the movies but when I read about Glorfindel I was blown away that he was omitted in that he had such a great part in the early part of the journey....Wether at the beginning or end of the journey every step was important & I really wished Glorfindel would have been in the movie....I would love to hear what Peter jackson had to say about omitting Glorfindel.

^I think it was a matter of introducing Arwen, really. They wanted to show the love story between Aragorn and Arwen, and it was a great way to introduce it. Considering the fact that quite a few characters had to be cut out of a story, I think it makes sense. I would've loved to see Glorfindel, too, but I don't actually mind the way they did it.

Yea now that I think about it more you are spot on in that it was a great way to introduce Arwen. And I don't mind either as it did not take nothing away from the story at all, it just really suprised me Glorfindel was left out.

I have a friend that thinks it was awful that Tom Bombadil was left out, but for me, I don't see how his character would have helped in the movie at all. But I also do not completely understand the whole Tom Bombadil part of the book completely either. I will have to read thru it again.

^I have to admit I never really cared for Tom Bombadil. I think if I met him I'd find him quite exhausting :P What I love about that part of the book though, is that it's got a lot of great poems.

Glorifindel is way cooler than Arwen they should've had him instead that would have been a cool scene w/ him in it.

Agreed, even if they just done about a 5 minutes scene with him I would have loved it, but I also agree with the other member about it being a nice spot to bring Arwen into the movie...Oh well, all is good :-D

Go away with Arwen, bring the Glorfindel ;-) I was always upset that they cut Glorfindel out. Arwen had a lot of screentime so it wouldn't hurt to show him near the river.

Glorfindel!!!! It really doesnt make sense because Liv Tyler didn't even do any of the horse back riding anyway. And I also think that Glorfindel should have done it was because the possibility of Arwen going out by HERSELF to go save a bunch of Hobbits when NAZGUL is roaming about IS JUST PRETTY LOW!

I like Glorfindel but Arwen is my chosen lady, I love her, so I vote for her ;)

I agree with what Ainu said at the beginning of the thread.
I would have loved to see Glorfindel in FotR, not to mention the first few chapters of the book they also did away with. Although I'd like to be a true purist, the fact is that when you're making a big Hollywood movie like LotR, you have to make some sacrifices. For the most part, I understand why PJ made the decisions he did to do things differently in the movies, like substituting Arwen for Glorfindel in the ford scene.

I understand why PJ did it but I still prefer Glorfindel. Arwen in books was almost invisible but if PJ gave her bigger role, the scene with river fits her.

In the movie, they did a great job with Arwen doing it, and I can see why they did her instead of Glorfindel, but I'm still voting it should have bee Glorfindel.

Hmm, but if so...

A) Jackson could have employed Legolas here

B) Elsewhere Jackson introduced Haldir and gave him a greater role

C) Even employing Arwen here did not mean she had to 'sneak up' on Aragorn and put a sword to his throat, nor ride with Frodo, nor did Jackson have to take away Frodo's moment at the Ford

So I can see an arguable concern here given the medium of film, in general at least, but I think there were other options as to how to resolve the problem -- even if it were all agreed upon that introducing Glorfindel here would have been 'too problematic' -- although I don't think it is all agreed upon in any case, so that's why I stress an 'arguable' concern.

I don't like Arwen at all. It should stay as in books, they should introduce Glorfindel. I really liked his enter so after reading the book, I was all "why they changed that". Well, I may understand why but still.
