This scene is one of the most moving of all the three movies as Gandalf gave them hope and somehow represented hope. The expression on Frodo´s face exactly shows what the loss of him means and to wich extent the fellowship is broken. I think Elijah Wood acted fantastic cause you realize that to him it´s first of all a personal loss.

yeah, this scene was a very heart rending scene, though surely legolas would have experienced death before? yes, elves can't die from sickness or old age, but they can die in battle (or of a broken heart), so you would think that at least one elf ywho was close to him would have died at some point...

This was such a sad scene!
When Sam sat there crying, Gimli who wanted to run back, make things undone, the look on Frodo's face.. Everyone dealt with the loss differently.
But also Aragorn's grief as you said Meltithenniel, strong from the outside, shattered inside.. When Gandalf fell he was just standing there.. that look on his face.heartbreaking...

I was spilling tears as soon as I saw the look on Frodo's face. My heart broke for him right there. Everybosy was sad, but Frodo's sadness stands out to me for some reason. Maybe just because I love Frodo.
This was the only place in the movie where I really liked Boromir. When he's telling Aragorn to let them grieve for awhile, and wehn he's sad himself. It showed Boromir's compassionate side, which we didn't get to see a lot in the films. Also, he kind of surrendered his pride for a minute, took down his walls, and let other people see that he was troubled. I liked Boromir's character just then.

Meltithenniel wrote: The scene outside Moria was the saddest scene... where everyone was crying for Gandalf... Merry and Pippin were crying, Sam was crying, Frodo was crying, Gimli was devastated, legolas... oh Legolas was sooo confused and sad!!! Poor Legolas... he never dealt with the concept of death before. Boromir was phased... very phased. and Aragorn was, well, Aragorn. Strong on the outside, shattered on the inside. Anyone want to discuss any of the character's reactions?
thatl a very good description of th e scene
i view it that way too. it was really sad

Gandalf falling was a telling blow to the fellowship, and Frodo, to me, had the most heart rending expression when Aragorn called him, and he slowly turned to look at him.
Another painful death scene was the death of Haldir in TTT. I felt very moved, and saddened by the loss of so much knowledge, and memory torn away.
