I loved the way PJ did the Shire! It was exactly I imagined it would be. The music definitely created the proper Hobbiton feel. Very bouncy and merry and lively. Just like Hobbiton.
I thought the Hobbit holes were amazing! They were beautifully done. I love the little round doors and windows. Bag End was great.
Overall I was just really impressed with the Shire in general.

The hobbit kids are really cute! There is one little girl in particular...... she had dark brown eyes and dark curly hair, and she was looking at Gandlaf with her mouth open in awe at the party. Do you guys know which one I'm talking about? Anyway, she was the cutest! I think she might have been seen again in TTT in the caves before Helm's Deep, but I'm not sure. Hmm...... I'll have to watch it again.

I must say i love the mini Shindig! You know the 'dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum dum...' you know the music they play at the party. I find that awesome. What i find particularly amusing is the way in which they introduce Merry and Pippin. I love the fact that Pippin's scream is 100% real! On the DVD special features it's revelaed to us that Billy Boyd had no idea that they were actually going to lift the Dragon Firework up in the way they did. It was a complete suprise to him. I find that soooo funny. If you watch it after knowing this the scene just seems funnier each time : :-D

LOL. Billy Boyd. I love that man. He is so funny! Dominic Monaghan is as well. Billy has a nicer accent though. :)
I felt that the Shire was captured perfectly. The Shire has this sort of genuine, purely Hobbit spirit. I seems to embody all the qualities of Hobbits and Hobbit life. I think PJ did a remarkable job in capturing the Shire spirit and putting it into film.

lol yeah, his scottish accent woop!

But yes, i agree entirley with you. I love the way PJ managed to show the life of a Hobbit so perfectly. We know that Hobbit's love to be welcoming characters and we see that as soon as Bilbo says to Gandalf...'i could make you seom eggs if you like...' lol and we here him muttering in the background other foods lol. I love the way he uses the comparison 'I feel thin...sort of stretched like butter scraped over too much bread...' what a typical hobbit comparison...one with food! lol.

At Bilbo's party, we get a real insight into the socialbility of hobbits and the way in which they all seem intertwined in each others business! I think the way PJ did that during Bilbo's speech as he names each type of hobbit was fantastic. I also love the fact that at the Green Dragon everyone seems so friendly! We can see how much hobbits like to interact and meet new people when the four hobbits enter the prancing pony inn and Pippin starts talking about how he knows a Baggins 'Frodo Baggins...he's my second cousin...once removed on his mother's side...' lol. That is such a great way to portray these idiosyncrassy's.

I never really thought about that comparison that Bilbo used, about bread and butter, but now that you bring it up, it's a really good point. Food is definitely a huge part of Hobbit culture. They love to eat. I also think this comes out really clearly in the scene at Farmer Maggots fields, when Merry and Pippin are stealing the vegetables and naming all the other ones they've stolen.
Bilbo's speech is purely Bilbo, and truly Hobbit. I am inclined to attribute it to Tolkien though, as he was the one who actually wrote it. That was one of the things they took directly from the book. If I ever have to speak at a graduation or something, I definitely want to quote Bilbo's speech, just to see the looks on everyone's faces. LOL. Bilbo. Some of those poor Hobbits are probably still trying to work out what he said. :P

Funny thing is that when i first watched that scene i was determined to figure out exactly what it meant, and i do of course know now what it means. What i particularly love aboit Bilbo's speech is the fact that the only two people who seem to undertand what it is he's saying are Frodo and Gandalf. If you look at Gandalf's face as soon as he says 'I know half of you half as well as i should like, but i like less than half of you half as well as you deserve' you'll notice [if you haven't already] that Gandalf looks as though he was almost expecting to hear Bilbo say this...as if it's typical of him and Frodo's just smiling sweetly.

I love the way Elijah Wood's smile fades as Bilbo kinda says 'I have things to do' and Elijah's head is at a kind of tilt until his smile totally disappears and just as Bilbo says 'I'm going now' Elijah puts his head straight and it creates such a great effect. I love it!

Very good post Frodo's Guide. I agree with you.

I think you're absolutely right about the Frodo and Gandalf thing. Gandalf seems almost to roll his eyes as if to say "Typical Bilbo." And he certainly knew what Bilbo was going to do. That's why he made the firework to cover up Bilbo's disappearance, so there would be less suspicion. Also, he went to the Hobbit hole to head Bilbo off and make sure he left the Ring. Yes, Gandalf definitely knew about Bilbo's plan. Frodo I think had a feeling, but no more than that. He knew Bilbo well enough to know that some thign was going on, and afterwards he knew what Bilbo had done before he was even told, but I don't think he knew what Bilbo was going to do until he did it. Elijah definitely did a great job acting out that scene, as he does pretty much every scene. I do like how his smile at Bilbo's speech fades slowly into an expression of confusion, and then surprise and even dismay. You could see the transitions clearly on Lij's face.

It's too bad that in the movies he doesn't do that. I really like that scene. Whenever I want to confuse anyone I just say that and they kinda look at me funny. :P You're both right about Bilbo, Frodo and Gandalf. I totally agree.

I do think that it was acted out brilliantly. I agree about the fact it's too bad that they didn;t use the firework as a distraction but i did quite like how they did it. It showed Gandalf's signature trick at it's best and it was awesome. :)

I agree with that also! It seemed like a beautiful atmophere with a very welcoming neighbourhood. It was a world of it's own in Middle-Earth.

Hobbiton. along with most of the other places in Middle-earth, does looklike somewhere out of a dream. Probably because it/they was/were. :) They were the visions, the drams of Tolkien that he brought to life in his books and that PJ brought to life in the films.

I actually like the fireworks in the Shire. They show the innocence of the Shire I think in the Hobbits' obvious fascination with them. Besides, I love seeing a bit of Gandalf's magic, and (in the movies) Pippin and Meryy are so cute and funny when they set off that dragon!
