Ahhh, the Shire. That is such a lovely scene. The Hobbits seem so pure and innocent... and yet very real. One could almost believe in Hobbiton as a real place.
The scenery and people remind me very much of an early Renaissance village-- which is probably what it was patterned after.
I love the little Shire houses too... so cute!! So original.
And I agree with you all on the Hobbits fascination with food; it is SO evident throughout all three movies. It just makes them even more real, in my opinion. It's the little quirks that form a character.

i live in the english county tolkien based the shire on so i like to say i live in the real shire, and i can assure you it really is that beautiful (at least the bits man hasn't screwed up are).
i think PJ recreated the shire perfectly - the only problem is that the weather's too good!

Oh wow! You're sooo lucky! Do you live in a country house or in a village?
Where was it that Tolkien got his Shire inspiration from then?

the shire in general is based on worcestershire (although hobbiton is based on sarehole which was a small village in a neighbouring county when tolkien lived there, but has now been swallowed up by birmingham).
i actually live in a large-ish town, so i'm not as countryfied as you seemed to presume. we're still classed as rural though, and you can see countryside from the town centre.
i personally think it's a beautiful area - the malvern hills in particular. i guess it depends on what you like - it's not terribly dramatic scenery, mainly rolling hills, woods and rivers.
i'm sure people at home would laugh to hear me say this, cuz they only really think of the towns and cities, but the beauty is still there if you make an effort to go look for it.
anyway, the point is that i've seen first hand what tolkien had in mind when he wrote about the shire and i think PJ did a pretty good job in recreating it - it's a slightly idealised version of the area i know, but then so was tolkien's.

wow that's amazing! Shame about Sarehole though ! awww!
I believe that The Shire demonstrates peacefullness in Middle-Earth. It is the centre of peace, tranquility, friendships, social life and all other great aspects of life. It demonstrates perfectly, what Tolkien wanted to reprensent [PJ's version of the Shire] with the way in which New Zealand is, there couldn't have been a better place to set the Shire in...unless Worcestershire was an option ! Imagine Elijah Wood being on the hills behind your house!

If i had to live in any place in middle earth, the shire, hobbiton especially, would be in a high place. I've havent read the books yet, but i'm sure he made hobbiton exact. afterall PJ rocks. it's like that one little place you feel like you can go, where everybody knows your name, and its always hapee, and all your friends go there etc. i LOVE hobbiton horrah for pj and hobbiton

When I watched the movies again I noticed how all the hobbits all look like they're alcoholics... they have this red nose and cheeks and appear to be boastful - at least the ones at the bar. And they are very peasant-y.. in the cosy, but dirty kind of way... Only Bilbo and Frodo seem to have a civilised manners and a clean hole!!
Yesss preciouss I'm being harsh here, and I'm not sure I want it to be much different than what PJ made, but... well, the loose-running pigs in the returning scene... *shrugs*

I love the shire, it would be brilliant to live there. The 1st scene of FotR is amazing and i think the music from it is the best in all the whole trilogy. It looks so beautiful, peaceful and has sort of a friendly look about it. I looks really fun to - especially bilbo's birthday! It all looks so realistic too!

Diddo.. they did such a good job on that scene!
That was a great place for Tolkien to start and end.... with the way life should be.
