What was the first reaction for the Ring in Hobbit? Did you feel that it may play important role in others life or you thought its just magic ring that was accidentally found by Bilbo?

Or you read Hobbit after Lord of the Rings and knew everything and it was great to watch how Ring became important and hobbits adventures began?

yeah, I read the Hobbit after Lord of the Rings, but I think it was cool to watch how the Ring became what it was, and how Bilbo discovered it, and his riddle game with Gollum. :)

It's been almost 20 years since I first read the Hobbit. I really don't fully recall my initial reaction. I was in grade school.

I have read Hobbit after Lord of the Rings so I am curious what people thought of it when they read it before ^^

From me, it was nice touch to read about so meaningfull ring from the beginning of the hole story. I even liked it much better than LotR for some because of these feelings connected ith it.

I've read Hobbit after Lotr but I think people can't understand the importance of the ring if they read Hobbit first

I seem to be in the minority here, because I read The Hobbit first. Well... my mom read it to me, actually, but same difference. :P Anyway, since I had no idea the Ring was evil, I thought it was pretty cool. I think I might have wanted one. Magical jewelry? Bring it on. :D

But then when I watched the LotR movies I was a bit offended, because it completely changed the story of The Hobbit. I didn't like that the Ring was evil, or that Bilbo was old and strange, and then when Gandalf died... too much for my 8-year-old self. Too much. :P

Haha, Shadow, I actually CAN feel you  I am a little bit envy that you read Hobbit before Lord of the Rings, it had to awesome feeling to read it all from the beginning.

But to be true, I felt like "the Ring isn't actually as evil as I thought in LotR" :p

I read the Hobbit after I read and watched LOTR. So I knew everything. :D But I enjoyed reading it and finding out the backstory to it, I was delighted.

I've got to admit, my parents read me The Hobbit when I was little... To me it was just a magical ring really... It wasn't until I found out that there were more books grouped together under the title 'Lord of the Rings' that I even considered it might have more meaning... I do agree with Smaug though, after reading LotR I was surprised it was actually as evil as it was :)
I wonder how they'll portray it in "The Hobbit" film... Maybe they'll make it more evil than in the other films.

Originally the Hobbit was not a prequel to the LotR, but a stand alone story. Only when the popularity of the Hobbit caused the demand for a sequel did Tolkien begin work on the LotR. In the beginning the Ring was just that, a ring. It just happened to be magic and make you invisible.

I saw the LotR then read the Hobbit then the LotR, but it would make sense to me that people would just see the Ring as an awesome tool that could be used for fun, as it was written as a neutral item.

Well, I read the Hobbit after reading LOTRs so I knew the Ring was very important, but it was really nice to read a story where it wasn't really much more than something usefull that wasn't harmful in the least.

I think the Ring was more harmful in the Lord of the Rings because it wanted to get back to its master, Sauron.

I read the Hobbit after Lord of the Rings :)
As soon as Bilbo found the ring I was like "YES! YES!"
I probably looked like an idiot...since I sort of shouted it out loud...does that mean there's something wrong with me? O.O

XD I hope not, Gemb, because I've sort of done the same thing! When I was reading RotK for the first time (this was after I had seen all 3 films, even though I read the first book before I saw FotR) I accidentally shouted, "GET RID OF THE RING, FRODO!" ....during school...in a class...during a test that I'd finished and others were still working on...

Anyway, I read the Hobbit when I was nine and LotR when I was fourteen, so I didn't really get the significance of the Ring until I read LotR. I knew that it could turn you invisible and Gollum wanted it, but that was about it. Since the Hobbit is more intended for children than LotR is, I think it's nice that the Ring has a bit more of an...innocent connotation in The Hobbit.

Yes. You do see hints in the Hobbit that the ring is something more than a mere item that can make it invisible. Gandalf is certainly suspicious of it. I like how it sets up a bit of mystery. I did find it a shock in grade school when I opened FOTR for the first time and found out just how the ring is so evil and draws evil to itself.

I read the Hobbit before, so I would have had no idea where it was going to end up, if it weren't for the fact that I had already seen the LotR movies.
