I´ve read the hobbit over the christmas holidays!! I like the fact that you learn more about the dwarf-race than in the LotR-books. My favourite chapter is "Riddles in the dark", cause it´s thrilling but on the other hand also very funny especially Gollum´s comments!
I like Beorn, King Bard and Balin the most out of all characters.

The Hobbit...wrote for children and full of childness, and that's the great thing about the book. It is for little children though you can already see Tolkiens style of writing really good, which maked you hunger for more...it's next to my bed

yep exactly. Even though I read it after the LotR trilogy I must say that if I had read it before reading LotR I just couldn't have waited to get more stories with Hobbits in them :)

My favorite character was Smaug (obviously, haha) because he was such a calm, cool bad guy with a temper a mile wide and oh so close to the surface. I love the way he matches wits with Bilbo and the depiction of his attack on Lake-Town. One of my favorite scenes from the book is when Bilbo first comes across the dragon's lair.

I liked it when Bilbo met the elves in Mirkwood and had to escape Laketown in a wine barrel.

I'm actually rereadin The Hobbit right now, its such a fun, amazing story. I like Bilbo's character, the way he kept resistin the urge to have an adventure, but the further into the adventure he got the more he seemed to enjoy it, even if he wouldn't admit it to himself! All the dwarfs each had their special characteristics that made them awesome. I cant wait to see the story brought to life on the big screen!

I like Gandalf as well, I like the mischievous side he shows every now and then. Whats everyones favorite part? I like the part with the trolls, I find it funny, and I also like the part with the spiders because thats where Bilbo really seems to let his adventurous side come out as he bravely rescues all of his friends and fights off the spiders, and its where the dwarfs really come to respect him. And of course, Riddles In The Dark is a great chapter.

I liked that part too. I did a book report in my freshman year of high school over this book, actually, and I know I talked about that part in depth. I really went into my report explaining things, because it wasn't one of those 'give me a summary of the book' type of things, it was a 'tell me about it, explain or interpret it, and tell me what you thought of it and what parts stood out to you' type of a thing, and I really went all out. My english teacher probably thought I turned in a book of my own! So what are your thoughts on the Mirkwood elves?

Thranduil is pretty greedy. In the Hobbit they make the elves seem somewhat cruel.

I know, I thought that as well. Plus I'm thinking of Legolas and how his character is, and thinking 'wait, he comes from there? seriously?' I was surprised that there was an elf king that cared so much for riches and jewels, I never thought of elves as being obsessed with that sort of thing.

Yeah, come to think of it the elves described in "The Hobbit" somehow differ from the elves described in "The Lord of the Rings". They're a bit more cold, if I may say.

Thranduil isn't the only example of being obsessed with jewels and riches. In a way he kinda reminds me of Feanor ("The Silmarillion"). Though being greedy is a trait more common for the Noldor elves than for the Silvan.

Yes, they do seem more cold than the other elves. And you're right, I had forgotten about Feanor, its been a while since I've read The Silmarillion, I may have to pull it off my shelf again and refresh my memory.
