Hmm, I've never noticed that either, and I only watched them the other week.

I'm thinking as the people who looked after the horses, would have known them so well, they would have noticed that Shadowfax is meant to be all white. So if their second horse had black on his face, they would automatically go over it.

As for Eomer, we're seeing him at an angle, his face is grimy, and he is minus a helmet. Previously the only time we have seen him without a helmet is when he's attacking Grima, and his hair is all over the place, and when he takes his helmet off to comfront Aragorn. Again, messy hair. In that picture, it looks quite kempt.

I know that they used two different horses in the movie - on was names Blanco, and I can't remember the other horse's name. Maybe they were both slightly different.

More than one horse was used in the portrayal of Shadowfax, like in many movies they use more than one animal...even stunt doubles...you don't see many actors doing their own stunts now-a-days.

Except Viggo. Then again... he's just plain awesome!

Hi - I've been away from this board for a long time now. I was re-reading this thread just now. Demero did pass away after filming. Our dear friend, Blanco, is 20 now and has just completed his last "road" show, as travel is very hard on him at his age. Hopefully, if all the plans go right, Cynthia and Tony Royal will be opening a show in Vegas with him and his friends in the future. In the meantime, you can catch up with them at their website:

And yes, in his younger days, Blanco's nose was black. As he's aged, it's turned pinker. I've posted some pictures somewhere else on here that I've taken of him where you can see that his cute little nose is now pink. What a wonderful LOTR actor he is!

It was probably a make-up mistake or lighting. I've noticed from watching the movies little mistakes on Shadowfax. Plus it doesn't help when you are trying to make two horses look the same.

In the books Shadowfax is described as either silver or grey, and in "Nomenclature", Tolkien described the horse's name as meaning "having shadow-grey mane (and coat)."

Asfaloth, for example, is described as white.

I agree that it is likely just a mistake of getting the different horses to look the same. An easy thing to over look when you are running an operation that size!

On that note, however, I didn't realize that shadow fax (by name) was a silver grey. That is quite interesting and different than the movie portrayal for sure.

Everybody looked a little weird in that shot. For one thing, apparently helms deep has showers, because everyone is incredibly clean. Also, that shot had a different feel asthetically from most of the rest of the movie, I thought. The only comparable scene I can think of is when Frodo Sam and Faramir are looking down on Osgiliath and there's kind of a weird light. I think it was just the filter they used.

Oh come on...it was just the rain that washed them off! :p lol (sarcasm) but no, it is a pet peeve od mine... one time they look terrible, then you come to the "important"scene and suddenly they are all fixed up, clean, nice hair etc... it detracts from the film for me.

I hadn't noticed that either, but the lighting for that shot is just a little odd overall. Everyone looks a bit funny. Like they put a filter over it so that all the dirt got covered up. It could also be a different horse, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just lighting.
