Well, I obviously should've re-checked this thread a little earlier.
Anyway, in the book, they don't pretend to be sleeping--they get him when he falls off the cliff and Sam jumps on him. So that bit you mentioned seems to have come from the movie (since that's what happened in the movie), as opposed to the book.
