I don;t usually nit-pick at my fave films but this one is not very serious and i just wanted to see what others thought -
when Frodo and Sam are "asleep" and Gollum first sneeks up on them muttering to himself, and he stretches out his hand, and they suddenly jump up and grab him, dyou think they were both awake 'waiting' or that they were both asleep and woke up at the crucial moment???

as you see, not a big deal, but what d'you lot think?

I thought it was pretty obvious they were awake and waiting for him. That's just me, though.

In the book Frodo and Sam act like they are asleep because they know gollum was tracking or following them, so they acted like they were asleep so they could catch him when he tried to grab the ring. but in the movie they don't mention that detail. idk why...
did i answer ur question? :)

I haven't read that part yet, I just started TTT a couple days ago. I think that they were awake in the movie, because in the scene before it, it goes something like this:

Sam: What's that horrid stink? I wonder if there's a nasty bog nearby. Can you smell it?

Frodo: I can smell it--we're not alone.

They knew by then that they were being followed, and most likely stayed up so they wouldn't be killed, ring stolen, etc... etc...

They knew, they knew, they knew...
How could they not have been staying awake? I'm surprised Gollum couldn't tell. I can tell the difference between someone awake and faking or someone really asleep.

True* but I would guess that Gollum's gaze and thoughts would have fully engrossed in the ring, and he wouldn't have noticed.

They probably were asleep and then woke up from hearing something. Once they were awake, they just stayed up and laid there so when Gollum came by they could just attack him. (Kind of what people do when they are afraid of something. Just resting in bed awake a constantly alert.)

With Gollum, like Slickman said, he was most likely too involved in being so close to the ring that he didn't really consider the fact that the hobbits had it. AFter all, he hadn't had the ring in... years.

I second that! I believe they set up a trap for Gollum.

well in teh book sam and frodo knew he was following them and they faked sleeping and caught him when he was reaching for the ring. but i guess in the movie they just left out that detail.

I kinda thought they were both in that half-sleep state, so when Gollum was sneaking down the cliff, saying all his thoughts out loud it would make sense that maybe they heard a little of what he was saying and then just woke up.
But you all seem to have much more logical explainations.

This scene is pretty confusing but the way it was presented in the book clears it up. :)

but Frodo does mention to Sam, that they are not alone
..so they would have been on their guard
...maybe it´s in the EE version?
I get confused sometimes
