I would say partially corrupted but mostly just evil. He could have been turned a little by the will of Sauron but in the end he still was evil by his own doing.

I always thought Saruman was the one with a thirst for power which made him very vulnerable to the lure of Sauron. I think he may have became a tad bit evil on his own, but after looking into the Palantir and seeing all Sauron's power with in reach he completely lost it.

Just to comment on a previous post, the Valar did not create the Maiar. Valar and Maiar are the same thing, they are both Ainur. Valar is a name given to the greater of the order, whilst Maiar is given to the lessar.

Saruman was one of the five Istari who are in Origin Maiar, just like Balrogs and Sauron etc.

Nothing in Tolkien's world is 'Pure evil', so Saruman could not have been this. He was simply corrupted by the Rings, whilst being ensnared by Sauron at the same time.

Now, if Saruman was easily corrupted why was it so hard to corrupt Gandalf?

Saruman was the highest in Gandalf's order and it seems the higher position you have and the more responsibility, the more temptation you have and the easier it is to fall from the good path.

Even more important, I think Elrond spoke rock solid truth when he said, "It is perilous to study too deeply the arts of the Enemy, for good or for ill." I believe there are grave dangers in any world for anyone who studies evil too closely or becomes tobsessed with it. There is a saying in the Christian bible, "By beholding we become changed into the same likeness." This can happen even if our intentions are good and we have good motives in doing it. It was a large part of what cause Saruman's ruin.

he was corrupted,he was good at first, but then bcuase his chief lore was the lore of rings,. so he went deeper into the study of the One ring, learned of what it could do,and so wante it for himself,. he thought therfore that he would pretend to be on Saurons side, and then get the ring, then betry Sauron, and set himself up in his place,as Dark Lord

I think that When Cirdan gave The ring of Fire to Gandalf who was not as wise as Saruman at the time Saruman grew Jeoulous of the fact that Gandalf got the ring. I think then it was when Saruman slowly was corrupted by his jeoulousness and wanted power.

I think Saruman was just corrupted. He could have possbily been good if he had mastered himself.

I would have to say that he was corrupted through his pride, his jealously, his power and his desire for more power and the palantir.
