Saruman was a strong character I believe. How he could possibly betray his own kind. Do you think he is pure evil or corrupted by Sauron.

I think he was corrupted not just by Sauron, but the Ring. Even though he never saw it, the Ring I think was more of what Saruman was bent to. I also think he did it out fear.

I think he thought that nobody could possibly win against Sauron and against the Ring. So he did what he thought would most benefit himself - he did what he thought would help him survive, and that was to be on Sauron's side, or to help get the Ring. Otherwise he believed that he'd die, because when Gandalf refuses to join with Sauron, he says, "So, you have chosen death."

So really he was just looking out for himself. He was just incredibly selfish upon doing so :D. Therefore, he was corrupted by Sauron, the Ring and his selfishness.

That's a good way to put it. I can agree with that. But also didn't he look into palantiri and look out to far and get caught by Sauron?

i reckon he was corrupted by Sauron because he used to be a good wizard like Gandalf but he was weakened by his want for power.Sauron probably sensed this or something and when Saruman looked into the palantir he was easily corrupted by Sauron and the ring and evil in general.

I think he could've been both. Mostly corrupted, but a little evil, because he made a choice, and Gandalf gave him a chance to help them and redeam himself but he denied that too. He wasn't completely a victim of Sauron, because Gandalf gave him a choice. But he was probably very scared of what might happen to him if he didn't join Sauron.

hmmm i think it was himself, actually, more than Sauron, because he thought he could handle the Palantír when he looked into it, but he was wrong, and Sauron caught him spying on him and posessed him.. he wrecked himself.

^ I agree, but there must have been something good inside of him, because he betrayed Sauron, too, as well as the White Council. He desired to be a "new" Sauron, and so he searched for the ring.

^hmmm theres some truth in that too ... he was acting against his own free will, i think, when he was serving Sauron.

Saruman was a Maiar, created by the Valar, and corrupted right? (correct me if I'm wrong)

Now, if Saruman was easily corrupted why was it so hard to corrupt Gandalf?

ahhh ... i'm stupid ... i always thought he was an Istari  ooopsers welll ... theyre both Maiar? well maybe it was easier to corrupt Saruman because he was more powerful than Gandalf at that time, and was more full of himself. arrgggg ... i know what i want to say but i cant type it out ... whatever :P

i think he was corrupt, at first he was good.

I think neither. I think that meant to do good, not evil...Like if you think about any people who were considered evil in real life, thought they were doing the right thing, dispite how stupid it really was.

^I like that. It is kind of true. How can you define good from evil when who you think is evil also thinks you are the one who is evil, and they think they are the ones doing the right thing.

Exactly Itaril. Who is there to say what is good, and what is evil? I'm sure that he thought the men and elves were evil.
