Actually, Saruman had offered Eowyn as a kind of reward for Grima, if he succeeded in his act of gaining total control of Rohan. Grima was definitely very angry and frustrated when Gandalf came and revealed him for what he was: a traitor. He was probably pretty scared too because of the fact that Saruman would most likely punish him, and he'd never see Eowyn again.

*agrees* somehow I always agree with someone.. however I definitely agree with ya Larael. Maybe this was also a reason for why he got so angry about Saruman in the end (but just one reason..)

Ah, that was in the movie, right?

[Lol, I'm being really stupid. Of course it has to be from the movie, this is a movie thread. :P ]

Anyway, I think Grima was definitely afraid of losing Eowyn forever, because he knows that Gandalf is probably going to defeat Saruman. Fear can cause anger...

I fully agree with ya there. In the end I think he kind of lost it when Gandalf showed up.

Didn't Grima cry when he saw saruman's army? did he cry because he realized that, he wasn't out to get control of Rohan, Saruman wanted to destroy it. So, Grima wouldn't be in charge of anything anyway because of Saruman. So did Grima get corrupted by Saruman( saruman making Grima believe that if he got control of Rohan, he would rule it. After all, Saruman could overtake people with words AND power) so he could use Grima just to destroy Rohan? Poor grima...

Yeah kinda felt bad for him either. He was so hopeful about Eowyn that at last he is gonna get her sooner or later however, he did not know about Saruman's plans and of course Sauron I think so

I have always thought of Grima as a creepy character. I hate the way he has those looks about him. He is in essence a slave to Sauron whether by choice or not however, is a different matter.

We hear Eomer say 'Too long have you watched my sister...too long have you haunted her steps...' This tells us that he has loved Eowyn for a long time. Had Grima have remained faithful to Theoden, Eowyn may have grown to like him...we never know. However, i believe Farmir was a great choice for Eowyn. It was quite sad come to think of it. I mean. what if Grima never wanted to become a slave to the dark lord, and i don't think in his herat he really did. He knew that he was sacraficing his chances with Eowyn and that must have hurt him. He was too cowardly to back out though.

At first I kinda didn't like Grima , but in ROTK I started feeling sorry for him. Did you notice that he had tears on his face when Saruman showed him his army in TTT.. He was probably sad 'cause he thought Eowyn was going to die.

I think that the tear was there because Grima was shocked and he was all like 'wow that's amazing *tear of happiness*

Yeah I think it is true because when he said we need thousands. And Saruman answers ten of thousands and walk with him to the balcony. He must be so happy that he is gonna take Eowyn as his wife in no time.

Guys, please be more specific if you wanna write about the subject. Or else we will have nothing to discuss about.

i think some of you have been overestimating grima's feelings for eowyn - i always got the impression that he desired her rather than loved her, and they are most definitely not the same thing. with grima, it's all about greed and possession. i also don't think she was quite as high on his list of priorities as some of you think - if it was only about getting eowyn he would have known there were easier ways to do it.

i think grima was both corrupted and a servant - he was corrupted by his desires and so willingly made himself a servant to saruman.

grima wanted to feel powerful but was smart enough to realise that he couldn't get power on his own, so he tagged onto the most powerful person around. for a while that was theoden, but then grima saw how much more powerful saruman was and wanted to get in on the action. the fact that he did not just leave theoden for saruman shows the extent of his corruption - he was willing to bring down that which he had previously professed to love in order to get what he wanted.

But no one really knows if Gríma loved Éowyn or if he only desired her for power and greed and all that jazz. I have a soft spot for Gríma, and I choose to believe that he really did love her. I think that he cried when he saw Saruman's army because he realized the magnitude of what he had done, and he felt sorry for it. Perhaps not of for all of Rohan, but he realized what he did, and if only for Éowyn (because I insist on that), he felt bad.

I think that the reason Gríma went to Saruman is because...I think Saruman somehow knew that Gríma loved Éowyn, and he used that as bait to get Gríma to do his dirty work for him.

But, again, I have a soft spot for Grima. *shrugs*

I dunno, I was always of the impression that Grima had been shunned in Rohan's community most of his life which was probably why he went into Saruman's shelter of power. He was too weak to gain his own power, so he latched on to Saruman in the hopes that he could gain some.

Because of this, I do not see Grima as someone who is capable of love. Soft spot or no for Grima, he definitely is not a good character. We may pity him for the way in which he probably grew up, but we can not pity him for the choices he made in his adult life. I definitely think that Grima thought of Eowyn as more of a lust object than anything else.

In the movie, it is hinted that Grima may have been the reason for Theodred's death. If he had loved Eowyn, I think he would have taken into consideration the effect his death would have on her. If he loved her, he wouldn't want to see her in pain.

His lust for her led him to do terrible things, just so that he could get what he wanted. No power of love would cause someone to such things. Even if people do bad things in the name of love, I would think that person not in their right mind. Love is something pure, not to be used in unpure acts.
