I think Frodo was all in all the greatest hero but I don't think he was a very honorable one. Let me explain.
Frodo did destroy the ring and fought through all the perils with amazing spirit but at the same time, come of the choices he made along the way were nothing to be proud of. He was a horrible judge of character bringing Gollum along for the journey, he hardly treated Sam like a friend most of the way, and became nothing to respect when he turned to trusting Gollum and pushed Sam away after all Sam had done for him.
But when he was standing in the Cracks of Mount Doom, I think that's when he realized the mistakes he'd made and he needed to feel at peace with himself and he gathered the courage to do what was right and what he knew he had to do. He is definately a hero, but he can't over shadow all the others that helped him become one.

Very good, Itarildë ... I am going to have to change my mind and agree with you on this one :D

I still think Samwise was the hero :) He was so loyal to Frodo and kept him going in the darkest hour even though Frodo had been mean to him and Sam was the one who carried Frodo up Mount Doom and he killled Shelob and rescued Frodo from the tower of Cirith Ungol :stab: . Sam also has a big heart and is certainly a hero and to think all these brave deeds came from a gardening loving Hobbit . Cheers to Samwise the Brave

Gollum also played a large part. Without Gollum Frodo would never have been able to get to Mount Doom.

Well if Frodo wasn't such a hero, he would have killed Gollum right away. Wasn't it Aragorn who was bowing to Frodo by the end of it? Aragorn didn't even go into Mordor or carry the ring, the hardest task of all.

I'd just like to put my two cents in by saying that I think everyone was a hero in the books, but each in different ways. Even the baddies were heroes if you look at it from their side. Every one is a hero, no matter how small their role is. Everyone makes a difference!

Certainly most of the characters acheived some heroic deed before the story was finished.
Personally, I think that Frodo was most heroic though, but part of that is because he is an insignificant hobbit. We wouldn't expect him to be heroic, but he is. Aragorn is a strong man and King. That figure would be expected to do brave deeds in a story. A hobbit who is 1/3 his size who hasn't faced half the things Aragorn has faced, is not really someone's first pick for the hero of the story. Yet Frodo most definitely is that.
Lord of all has some words of Tolkien's in an earlier post that explain it better than I can.
Admittedly, Sam was a big part. He was there for Frodo no matter what. He carried him in the end. But Sam also wouldn't have been there if it wasn't for Frodo. Frodo saved Sam a few times too (i.e. Barrow downs).
A lot of people have posted to say that Gollum played a big part, which he did. But I don't think that he did out of heroic motives. He did it out of selfish motives. He just wanted the Ring. Therefore, I am rather disinclined to attribute Gollum with any heroism. Gollum was merely the instrument of fate and Iluvatar in the destruction of the Ring.
I think that's about all for my rant today. ;)

I think the real heroes are Sam, and Aragorn. Sam for making it all possible with aiding Frodo to be bitter end.
Aragorn knowing that he would probably not survive the battle at the gates of Bharad-Dur.

Here's another thought...Gandalf!!
He was the instigator of the whole adventure, and without his realization that thr ring was in fact the "One Ring", all would have been for naught.

I think Dumanyu was just trying to put a different perspective on the thought that without "so and so" the Ring would have never gotten to Mount Doom. I think Dumanyu was just saying that if Gandalf had never realized the Ring was the 'Ring' then there would've been no journey. Am I right?

^ That's what I got out of it too.
Pretty much every character played a part in the Ring's destruction in some way, but really Frodo is the centerpiece of everything. Take him away, and everything falls to pieces. He is the Ringbearer. Even though he had help, ultimately, it was up to him.

I said Other. Like many have said before me, with out Sam and Gollum, Frodo never would have made it. I love Aragorn with all my heart and soul, but Sam I think is the real hero in the story

Did someone say before that not killing Gollum made Frodo un-heroic? Why, in the end, it was Gollum who led to the destruction of the ring. Frodo was heeding the very wise words of Gandalf, and everything he had to go through was very heroic. :)

I must also agree with larael, by saying nearly everyone in the Lord of the Rings was a hero, just in different ways. I don't think it;s quite fair to ask who is the 'greater' hero. Sam was a loyal friend. Frodo endured great pain. Aragorn was a valiant warrior. Faramir was also a courageous warrior, and an obedient solider and kind healer. Eowyn was a brave sheildmaiden, and Gandalf was a wise mentor. You cannot rank all of these great tasks, and if you did, it would simply undermine how they all worked together for the greater good.
