I think this scene served both purposes whatever it was intend for. not only does it make you loathe and even fear Gollum, but it strongly shows you the power of the Ring to corrupt.
Frodo and Sam's friendship was one of those pure and beautiful friendships that nothing could break. There was no doubt or distrust or hatred between them. Yes, Gollum lies in this scene, but what does he lie about? The Ring. He says Sam wants it. If Gollum had lied to Frodo about anything else, that didn't involve the Ring, I'm sure it wouldn't have made Frodo act as he did. But he prayed on Frodo's corruption, on the part of Frodo that was possessed by the Ring. That's why Frodo behaved the way he did.
As you said Princess, I understand why they added the scene, I just don't like it. Frodo and Sam's friendships is one of those few perfect friendships out there, and I don't liuke it being marred or disgraced or degraded by anything.
That said, I'm in love with the films, so just because there is one scene I don't agree with, doesn't mean that I don't adore the film it's in.

Well as i keep saying...at least you understand the reason for it's exsistence, but i must point out it does hurt me a lot when i watch this scene. I filled up straight away and the way in which the use of the Shire's theme music is melded in there really brings a tear to your eye doesn't it?

No seriously though, this scene is good! Think about what it does for the film!

It demonstrates the strength of their friendship Tinuviels Tears! Sam came back because he was in no way prepared to give up on his best friend for the sake of corruption, this scene gives us a greater love for Sam...he remained faithful to his words...'Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee....and i don't mean to' We can gain a much greater love for their friendship. It also influences us to feel strongly against the ring because of it's effects, and gollum, which is completley proven though the way each of you guys are reacting! This is the effect Tolkien would have wanted, the effect PJ gave us and the effect which every one of you guys and myself feel!

Very well thought out and very well said Frodo's Guide. That is another purpose that this scene serves. It shows the indissoluble bond between Sam and Frodo, that beautiful pure love that even the Ring can't destroy. It's very hope giving and inspirational, to know that there is something, a love so strong, that the Ring, that evil, cannot taint it.
By the way, I'm very anti slash so none of what I said was menat to be viewed in a sick disgusting way. Thank you. :)

lol don't worry, no mis-interpretations on this side of the shire lmao.
Yes but i'm glad you agree with me on this. Love is the strongest force in the world, and Hobbit friendship is also an indestructible force. This is why when you put the two together, no amount of evil can take that away from you. Sam also kept a faith didn't he? Nothing can ever tak eaway faith either, and when these strong emotions are all intertwining there's no way that anyone could destroy such a beautiful thing. They were more like brothers by the end of the trilogy, and they did share a pure brotherly love. That's one thing i love about the end of the trilogy...Frodo states

'And thus...a fourth age of Middle-Earth began, and the Fellowship of the Ring, though eternally bound by friendship and love was ended'

seee :)

Eternally bound.............by friendship and love. For the first time, those words strike me in a peculiar way.
True, love is the strongest force on this earth. Many people say that good is the opposite of evil, but what does good come from? Love. Pure, true, honest, indestructable love. But this is for another time, another thread.
Certainly Frodo and Sam's love was some of the most beautiful love. And indeed there was a strong love even amongst the Fellowship itself. And it did create that sort of bond between them all. It leaves a sort of scar. Even when Frodo was gone, Sam still had that piece of his heart that was with Frodo, that would never let go. Evanescence says it better than I can. In their song My Immortal. "When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears, when you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears, and I held youe hand through all of these years and you still have a part of me." And also "I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone. But though you're still with me, I've been alone all along."
A beautiful, beautiful but sad song, that seems to be written for Frodo and Sam.

Hmm....that's a rather interesting reply Tinuviels Tears. It really makes me think but yes, the Fellowship was bound by a love so strong and although they had to split in FOTR do you not believe that the reason for this would have been out of love? They did it to protect each other and almost automatically Aragorn states he will not abandon Merry and Pippin which shows greatly how much of a love he shared for his comrades...his brothers.

A good point. The whole fellowship's love for Gandalf is so apparent in the scene after he falls into the shadow in Moria. (I always cry so hard at this scene. Especially when Frodo screams "Gandalf! Noooooo!" and when I see him cry outside Moria.) Love held them together, but love was also what tore them apart. Part of Boromir's motive to stay and defend Merry and Pippin was his love for them. Aragorn also followed them out of love. Some people may question whether he should have gone with to Frodo instead of Merry and Pippin, but I think that he knew that Frodo had to go on by himself from there. There was nothing more he could do for Frodo, so though he loved him just as much as (if not a little more then) Merry and Pippin, he did what he had to do by saving them.
The scene at the end of ROTK where the fellowship is reuntied is so good, and it shows us most clearly the love between the fellowship. I love the look of pure joy on Frodo's face when he sees Gandalf in front of him,a live, and the beautiful smiles that he and Sam exchange.

Sam and Frodo's relationship was very well carried out in the movies, as were the other relationships throughout the Fellowship. I hate the part when Frodo sends Sam away, but then it makes the part when Sam rescues Frodo a bit nicer. :)

that scene made me mad more than anything else - i almost shouted out "sam would never leave frodo, ever" in the middle of the cinema. i hate the way PJ kept changing characters like that. it's almost like he said "if frodo has to screw up then so does everyone else", so he wrote in dumb bits like sam actually turning back (if frodo had told book sam to go, he would have just followed him anyway) and faramir dragging frodo to osgiliath, just to make them look a little worse. that's deffamation of character and you can be sued for that, you know.

I agree with Frodos-Guide on this. Gollum would have been just as deceitful over Sam's intentions whatever had happened. Yet Frodo, before he had fallen under the influence of the ring, would never have turned on Sam. It is due to the effect that the ring has had on him that he begins to be taken in by Gollum's lies, resulting in him turning Sam away.

I think that the scene also does much to establish Sam's own strength of character, as he still believes in Frodo enough to go back when he realises the extent of Gollum's lies.

Of course, I had not read the books when I saw the scene, but I found it deeply moving, and I was totally rooting for Sam when he turned round and went back to Frodo.
