When Sam, Frodo and Smeagol are climbing the stairs to Cirith Ungol...Frodo struggles and Gollum takes hold as the ring comes into view. I'm just curious as to whether Smeagol would have grabbed Frodo's hand, had Sam not have threatened him with his sword. Was Smeagol working selfishley in the sense he was trying to portray Sam as a villian so that things would work out better for himself in the longrun? |

I think Smeagol was really just trying to get Sam into bad light just to make things better for himself. But if Sam hadn't threatened him with the sword, I think Gollum would've really grabbed it due to temptation. So once he grabbed it, he could've pushed Frodo off or climb away. I'm sure he's faster than the two hobbits when it comes to climbing. Just what I think about the whole thing =) |

Yeah, thats what I think too, 'cause after that he was trying to get Sam away from Frodo so he could attack Frodo and get the ring. |

I think Smeagol's every bit as bad as Gollum. I think Gollum is more agressive, but Smeagol's more cunning and...creepy. |

Well during TTT Smeagol did think of Frodo as his friend, and didnt want to hurt him. But then Gollum did convince him, talking about the ring and all. So Smeagol was corrupted by Gollum me thinks ![]() |

Wait what do you mean? He was reaching for Frodo, and he saw the ring, but I think he was going to pull him up to begin with before seeing it. |

yes but he was contemplating taking it if you see the look in his eyes, and also when Sam realises and draws his sword. I don't see Smeagol as a bad character at all! He is the hobbit who was sadly corrupted due to the effects of the ring. I also believe that although Gollum was persuading Frodo to distrust Sam, that it was the ring that was causing Frodo to become so gulliable. I'm sure there is a picture of Elijah Wood in costume make-up which shows what the Ring had turned Frodo into on the inside due to the levels it corrupted him at, and the force through which he was effected. |
