I don't understand why Gollum mdecided to return after the scene in the two towers wherein Smeagol clearly decided to forget about and live without the control of gollum.

Proclaiming 'Leave now...and never come back!'

Although Smeagol decided to stay away from Gollum, the Ring has more power on him. He can't really let go of Ring or Gollum.

well he wanted gollum to leave him, and he really thought that he did.. and he thought that he was smeagol once more, but when his anger struck, so did gollum.. and thus, he returned to smeagol and took over again. and the ring corrupted him too, and he lusted for it so he could never be rid of the gollum inside of him

I think it's becouse Frodo helped faramir and his man capature him.. When Gollum has that dialoge with himself in TTT he said:"Master will look after us now" so he didn't need Gollum anymore. But then Frodo gets involved when Faramir's men capature him, and I guess he thinks that Frodo won't look after him any longer, and that he needs Gollum again. And i think the ring corrupted him too...

(sorry if my english isn't that good)

:O So it's mainly the fault of Faramir backed up by the corruption of the Ring! Yikes!

I think that's true. He thinks master has betrayed him, so he needs Gollum again if he wants to survive. And once Gollum is back, he doesn't leave again. Sméagol had sent him away, trusting Frodo, but after he has been caught by Faramir's men, he realises, Frodo betrayed him and Gollum was right. And then Gollum comes back and Sméagol does again as he says.

hmmm, i guess that's a possibilty. I think that perhaps that was the main trigger anyhow but are there any other factors contributing to this?

It's like with any case of Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder), the extra personalities are created in order to protect the emotional health of the individual. Besides the irresistible and evil influences of the Ring, Gollum has been made to protect the frail and often naive Smeagol. Other factors such as overwhelming stress and a lack of sufficient nurturing and compassion in response to hurtful experiences. When Gollum returns, he certainley returns with a vengence and takes over the often indecisive Smeagol.

This is just the perspective of someone who loves psychology. ^^;;

I think that Gollum's quote, "Smeagol lied," says it all.

I always thought that the reason he came back was that he had been alone for a while, and when he was found he thought Frodo betrayed him. Then Faramir's men hurt him. I guess that made him mad enough that Gollum was able to come back.
