Well, i kind of have two questions, because I'm not so sure if I am so right with them..
Can it be that the Return of the Kings is the movie that goes away the most from the book? (many parts in the second book, many parts left out and replaced etc)
And can it be that the Lighting of the Beacons is nowhere in the books??

I just watch the movie today and thought about it.. But I was not sure, so I wanted to get some others opinion :-D

There are a lot of parts that go away from the book in RotK.

And as for the beacons, they are in the book. In the first chapter, Pippin asks Gandalf if there are dragons on the mountains because he sees spots of fire, but it's the beacons.

So, he actually does not light the fires..?

And of course the whole scene with Aragorn seeing the beacons and running to Theoden is invented right.. because he is on his way to Durnhag or somewhere else right? :-D

Lol--Aragorn was on his way to Dunharrow, not Durnhag. :P

But right.

^You should only do it if your German teacher has read LotR, otherwise it might be pointless! ;-)

Just wanted to mention the Red Arrow from the book, which was the final and gravest call for aid from Gondor. So it was sligtly different from the movies!

Ooh, good point, Eä. I didn't even think of mentioning the Red Arrow. Denethor sent Hirgon of Gondor like a week or two before Sauron attacked.

Yeah, the books had a much slower pace, and still the distances between Minas Tirith and Meduseld seems to be the greatest challenge at times. Actually, reading the book was quite stressing when Tolkien keeps mentioning how despairing it all looks because Théoden waits so long to ride to Gondor and when he does they are not sure they can make it to the battle even with the guiding of the wild men.... *sigh*
(And why is it I always end up talking about the book in the movie discussions and the movies in the book forums *sighs*)

But basically it wasn't such a big change from the movies.. the point was that Gondor called for aid.

Right. And it was slightly more dramatic in the movie. :P

But I have the same problem, Eä--I constantly refer back to the books in the movie section. :D

The Lightning of the Beacons was a dramatic scene?
Hmmm, I thought the scene was emotional and visually very powerful. I liked the poetic break in the movie compared to how dramatic a scene with the Red Arrow could have been.

Well in my opinion the meaning of the beacons is completely changed in the movie. In the book they are mentioned but Denethor has them lit and is not that mad as in the movie about Aragorn and stealing of the throne and stuff like that(at least not in the same way).

@Aerandir: If you need more German names in LotR just ask :) (yes I am German too ("and I'm proud of it. Cheers Gaffer!" :-D))
Dunharrow is not Dunhag but Dunharg in German.
E.g. the Shire is "Auenland" or Helm's Deep is "Helms Klamm"...
