True Eruhin. In the movie it is much more like a kindling of the last hope of men when they call for aid from Rohan.

Actually, I don't remember how the Lightning of the Beacons is described in the book. Where does the Red Arrow come into play?

The lighting of the beacons in the book is just when Pippin and Gandalf are riding on Shadowfax and Pippin sees a red light on the crest of a hill and asks Gandalf if there are Dragons in the area. Gandalf tells him that it is one of the beacons of Gondor.

The Red Arrow is brought by Hirgon in a section from Merry's perspective. I forget what time of day it was, but I think it was towards evening. Then, the next morning, everything was overcast with Sauron's artificial clouds, etc., and the second rider was talking with Théoden.

Right, now I remember, thanks Aerandear!
Yeah, the clouds.. I hated them, it was even worse to read in the books because it lasted so long and it was so depressing.

Imagine how vulnerable the beacons were if an enemy really wanted to cut off contact between Rohan and Gondor. They had only to make one successful raid on one of the beacons and kill the guards and the chain would be broken...

Yeah. That would have stunk for Gondor. But thankfully, the Witch-king wasn't that smart, so it worked out anyways.

I don't think the witchking considered the army of Rohan a real danger to his plans.

Well, Saruman was supposed to have destroyed them, too.

But through the thing with the Palantir and stuff Sauron must have known that Saruman was defeated.

But he didn't have an army to send in there to stop Rohan--it was too late to form another one. :D

The one he sent would have been big enough for the Rohirrim and the Gondorians if it hadn't been for Aragorn.

Right. Well, most likely, at least. And he also had the one in Anorien, too.

Maybe he did take Aragorn into consideration, but he didn't really know where he (Aragorn) was, so he couldn't really strategize against him.
