Seeing as how Gollum has been eating the flesh off thin, stringy cave fish his whole life, I can kind of see that.

Well, it does seem a bit unlikely... but then again, Gollum probably has very sharp teeth, considering that he basically hunts for his food in the wild and eats it "raw and wriggling." |

What's so incomprehensible about it? Gollum's supposed to be rabid/lunatic/savage and there are people like that in the real world that do stuff like that that we hear about all the time. Not sure why you'd find it such a mindblowing concept. |

The brain actually has some kind of built-in wiring so that you can't bite down on your tongue at full capacity, because if you do, you'll bite it off. Therefore, it's not unlikely that Gollum would have enough strength in his nasty fish-chomping jaws to grab a finger, especially since Frodo has delicate little hobbit fingers. ... of course, a strange conversation to be having when one of the characters in question is centuries old due to his obsession with a magical ring.  Also, this might just be the grossest post I've ever made on AU! Huzzah!

It didnt seem impossible when I read it, but now that you mention it, doesn't it say in the hobbit that gollum only has six teeth? |

I'm pretty sure it doesn't say anywhere in the book how many teeth he has, but in the movie Gollum mentions that he only has nine. However, given that he eats raw fish and other meat, he has incredibly sharp teeth, so no matter how many he has, he will have been able to bite Frodo's finger off. (Skitty, I think I could give you a run for your money when it comes to grossest post )

Also i guess in the end it shows the effect the ring had even on Frodo, and it made him want to keep the ring in the end like if Gollum never showed up...  So in my opinion frodo's finger mutilation shows that Frodo still couldnt have done it by himself, and Gollum still had a part to play
