There was a sketch on dead ringers about the multiple LOTR endings, all set in the Grey Havens.

par example...
Gandalf:Come on Bilbo, its time to go
Bilbo: don't want to. always trying to pack me off to some old peoples home, on time to look after me. the young people these days, no respect...

Gandalf: And now, its finally time to say goodbye. But first of all...Merry, I am your father.
(Later on...)
Gandalf: So, we played scrabble, ate pies, fought the death star, and now its finally time to go...(looks out to see, jaws music starts) SHARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and so on...It was funnier on t'tele. trust me :)

I like how the ended it and they were not really mulitipe ends because all of that stuff took place in the actually book, not the appendice.

The ending was just not complete. Tolkien has written what happened with the rest of the fellowship and it's so pity it isn't in the movie.
Pity is what stayed PJ's hand. Do not be so eager to deal out endings in judgement. In the visons it showed what happened to Aragorn and Arwen. Merry gets married to Esmarelda and has a bunch of of kids.
Pippin gets married to Diamond of LOng CLeave and has a buch of kids. Names one of them Faramir
Sam you know what happens to Sam
Legolas goes back to Mirkwood and eventually builds a boat and goes off to sea and drages Gimili with him.
Gandalf goes to the Grey Havens
To see the reest get your Rteurn of the King BOOK out and read the later events concrening the Fellowship.

I agree with everyone on here that PJ should have added more to the endings, :bounce: esp. the Aragorn and Arwen. would have liked to see the wedding, the farewell of Arwen to her dad, and King Theodon's burial. They completly ignored him! :annoyed2:

I think it would have been cool but a bit anticlimaxy (new word!) if the film had finished with the scouring of the shire, and what eventually happened to Saruman!

May have made the film drag on even longer, but...

YES, Eowyn and Faramir were totally neglected in comparison to how much time Arwen and Aragorn received,(my opinion only.)

As a movie, the appendixes wouldn't be very good, because they kind of mess up the overall sad emotion of the ending. Although the appendixes are very important, really. But a lot of things were neglected and left out, and other parts were unnecessarily lengthened. The wedding of Arwen, the parts with Eowyn and Faramir, the details in which so and so happened - instead of a wedding between Sam and Rosie, maybe they could have squeezed in more scenes. Although it was good to see Sam so happy. :bye2:

Hm I see your point, Elberethsq, but I think that PJ was kinda trying to keep at least a kind of time-limit on the film, even in the extended, to make sure that people didn't get too bored...

*smiles* Yes, I know, there's always time-limits, so I can understand very much, so I don't mean to be cynical and rude by offering criticism. :bye2:

That's very true. I totally see your point. But I think the reason why they didn't show as much Eowyn and Faramir is because Aragorn and Arwen stories goes from the first book to the last and Eowyn and Faramir's is just a part in ROTK. Though I still wish they had put more of Eowyn and Faramir. The reason why they expanded Arwen's role is because they needed to make her known. It would have been odd if she just showed up at the end.

Yes, I know. But in the end, when you see Eowyn and Faramir standing together, you think they're only friends. :bye2:

I agree the RotK ending was great and I don't have any problem with it. The Grey Havens scene was particularly fantastic!

However if anything, I would've liked to have seen the Scouring of the Shire touched on. I have to say I was disappointed that the demise of Saruman wasn't included in the theatrical and even in the ED it happened in the wrong place. Don't get me wrong, the Isengard seen was fantastic but I still would've liked to have seen the hobbits triumph over Saruman in their own right - by taking back the Shire.

I love the dead ringers! I'm so made that they don't play it on BBCAmerica anymore! (but I've seen when they were making fun of the fellowship of the ring like sending Frodo to modor for a carton of milk or a pak of cigarettes! lmao)

And I agree with you, Elberethsq!

They didn't do enough to cover Eowyn and Faramir or the appendixies!!

Obviously, I would have loved to see Saruman die in Hobbiton, but the way they did it was for sure 2nd best to the book! One of my pet peeves to movies are bad endings, and the way it was done was great- with multiple endings that tied it all off. :-D

I wish they would of showed what happened to legolas and gimli, but atleast they kept to the story, and didn't have everyone going on that last ship from Grey Havens
