I think he was so humble because he really didn't need to be in charge. Aragorn and Gandalf were there to lead, and he was there to be the 'super protector' and make sure everyone got through safely. Just because he was rather quiet doesn't mean he wasn't just as important.

my personal belief is he never thought he would inherit his fathers kingdom. Also he is only once called son of thranduil (by haldir) even aragorn introduces him as legolas from the woodland realm. apparently he didn't aknowlage a division between leaders and subjects or didn't want to
here is a site to research more on this:

I think Legolas was so humble because thats just way way elves are... I guess. But like Itarildë said, Just because he was rather quiet doesn't mean he wasn't just as important. Yup and it's true.

Another reason, perhaps (just to throw it out on the table) might be because of what his people were going through at that time. It may sound dumb, but the elves reign on Middle Earth was ending and they were leaving. Perhaps his humbleness might've been a sign of mourning for his kind. He knew that this would be his last chance to do anything for Middle Earth before the reign was left to Men.

^Wow. Very good point Itarilde. I agree with you.
I guess I never would have described legolas as a humble character, but now that you point it out, I guess he is very humble. I think Itarilde's point about him mourning for his kind is a good. I also like how even though Legolas is an Elf, and therefore superior in certain aspects to Aragorn who is a Man, he still submits to Aragorn as a leader. This is more than can be said for characters such as Boromir, who refuse to accept Aragorn as King even though they are not superior to him.
Also, if I may say it, Legolas has some awesome skill with a bow. Yet, he doesn't flaunt it. He just kind of quietly knows his deadliness.
I remember readin something wher Tolkien said that Legolas grew and learned the least out of everyone in the fellowship. I think it's probably because Legolas already knew who he was. He didn't need to make any important self discoveries. He learned the least because he knew the most if you see what I mean.

I think in general, Elves are more humble because of their knowledge and understanding of how things work. But Legolas is a great deal more humble then most of the other elves. That is an excellent point Itarildë. And know that you've mentioned it, I think that is probably one of the more likely reasons he is so submissive to Aragorn and Gandalf's leadership and is so willing to do anything to help out. However, I would not be suprised if his reasons for being humble were because one day he would become King of Mirkwood.

Hmm I am glad I opened the topic! These are all very good points. Although I would have thought that leadership would have come in handy if you were to be a future king. But I don't think it's in his personality, nor his race, to be dominant. However, there were some among his race, namely people such as Celeborn who was clearly a born leader. As was Haldir.

- are we mistaking being humble:-
..to being born as a regal personage,
who has been taught the ways of ancient times
and understands the importance of respect & alligence
..to being composed, even in times of crisis
(although he did lose it a bit, at Helms Deep)
..to recognizing his place in society
..to accepting it as part of an elf´s nature
- or perhaps he truly is, humble..?

Whycan't he be all of those things and humble as well? All of those things you said are true, and I would think that they would be points of pride for Legolas. Yet he stays humble and unarrogant.

Most people do not think he is humble.
I do like how he submits to Aragorn and respects him as the leader of their company without complaining. Just because he doesn't have all that many lines doesn't mean he wasn't thinking.

Yeah, not all efves are necessarily humble although some, like Galadriel, I think learned humility. For me, the thing that speaks the loudest to the humiity of Legolas is his unlikely relationship with Gimli. I know that it went both ways for them to develope the comradery they did but many times I find myself cringing in the book because of things that are said between them that could have been blown their friendship apart. But Legolas puts aside his pride and makes room in his heart for Gimli.
I love that!

That's true, all elves have at least a slight aura of arrogance about them, especially the wood elves. Perhaps Tolkien created that in them to show that none of the races were perfect, since many tend to think that the elves were *too perfect*.
But Legolas was not half as arrogant as some of the other elves like his father who had serious cases of it, and that is one of the reasons why I like him.
