I don't think it's very odd at all...

Orcs have brains like everybody else and so they can control their own movement and speech. The only reason they ever really had to be told what to do is because they aren't really the most intelligent creatures.

^Exactly, but despite that bit of unintelligentness [new word! ;) ] they are quite capable of making most decisions of sorts for themselves.

You know Tolkien also changed the ideas of a troll as well. Troll were original, in fantasy, little devilish creatures and they ranged from the size of a giant to a dwarf. But now, thanks to Tolkien, trolls are largely recognized as orgrish creatures.

I have heard of orcs in Tolkien's world first so I thought who they were as the rest, but SAW I know whatcha mean. Orcs in online games are defined as dumb and stupid which makes me wanna start a rebellion, but I'm not...They put orcs & trolls in the same position too, but orcs are being re-defined again, because of the movies.

So it does not sound to you wierd. I guess before LOTR I played so much fantasy :D.That made me confusing enough to open this thread. They are definitely able to talk and act as you all said. So I say this is one of Tolkien's creations.

Dunno ... I suppose it was a part of the fantasy world for a very long time.
