^That's a good question Éowyn.
We all saw how distraught Denethor became when his last son was brought back to him "dead". I think he realised his love for Faramir and decided he had nothing more to live for and so he decided suicide was the answer.
Of course if Faramir had been burned on the pyre with Denethor they would have both been dead so we wouldn't be able to see Denethor's reaction.

In this case I really pity Denethor. Within a few weeks he has lost both his sons. Of course, as "crazy" as he was, he would have killed himself after seeing his second son dead. Maybe he first would have buried Faramir...
But i just thought that maybe Denethor then would realize that he must do something against the enemy. Maybe he would have wanted revenge...

^Nah, I think Denethor was too busy wallowing in self pity by then to really care about the fate of others. I think he was just ready to die.

Death... I 'm not really frightened of death, but of what comes after death, or that nothing could follow...
But back to Faramir and Éowyn...

Yes, that's true, I too believe that Denethor was quite ready to die. I think he has prepared himself to die by looking into the palantir. He didn't see any more chance to live. And when Faramir was brought back home, nearly dead, I think Denethor has already made up his mind to commit suicide and not be killed by Orcs. Faramir only was the trigger to really do it.
(Sorry if my words don't make any sense...)

Don't worry, they make complete sense.
Since you brought up the Palantir, I'd like to say that I think it was the main cause for his want of death. Saruman and Sauron showed him things that did nothing to boost his confidence and love of life, the images he saw just brought on him more despair which ultimately killed him in the end.

yes that's true. But even though Denethor has lost Boromir I can't understand why he let his people down... idk perhaps it's because I take my duties very seriously..

Boromir was his great treasure, he didn't have any trust in Faramir at all. I can't imagine how horrible this must feel, every time you see your father, he tells you that you're not worth anything...

Very bad situation indeed. It feels like you are nothing. However, we saw what happens after Denethor thought he had lost Faramir too.

Yes it's terrible having to feel it just sometimes (like me), but having to face it all your live like Faramir must be very depressing..

Boromir was also his first born son, the only son [for him at least] to rule Gondor after him. For Denethor the thought of having his second born ruling after him was just not going to work. Faramir just didn't live up to the standards of his older brother.
