Okay, so everyone's knows what I'm talking about, right? That extended scene in RotK where Aragorns faces down the Palantir? Does the Evenstar pendant really shatter or is it a vision of some sort? This always bothers me to no end whenever I see it! Does anyone know?

I have actually thought about that, and I don't know. In the immediately following scene, Aragorn is shown riding to the black gate, with no pendant. Yet in Arwen's vision, Eldarion is wearing the Evenstar. Whether that is symbolic or what, it seems like it will survive as their love does. Also, there is an earlier vision where it "shatters" but actually we find out that it is still okay. Hmm, I should check the last scenes, to see if it ever shows up again.

That's what I always thought too Luthien. You basically said what I would have said. I always did think it was broken. But my friend said that it could've been just under his armour, but I said that they wouldn't have focused so much on his chest without the pendent if it was just out of sight.
But I really think it was shattered.

But that's so sad...I don't want to believe it broke, even if it did. I should look at those scenes up close, see if I can spot it. How could it shatter, anyway? I own a replica of it and It's silver and crystal, silver doesn't shatter. Crystal does, though...I guess...

Well, I watched those scenes again, from the shattering to the last scene with Aragorn or Arwen, and the Evenstar does not appear at any time. I must conclude that it does actually shatter, though it is a terrible thought!

My father says that because the elves are leaving Middle Earth, and their power is going with them, and the elven powers were keeping the even-star strong. So it does shatter, but in Arwen's vision, because it had not shattered yet, that is how she saw it. Either that, or they remake it for her son.

The shattering of the evenstar was symbolic.

It was when Aragorn first really relized that Arwen was dying. It was a symbol of her death. Or what would have been. Since The evenstar is a symbol of Arwen's life, and Arwen and Aragorns Love. Wich in a scence is the same thing. So if Arwen died or of she left middle earth their love, or Arwen would die. So it was symbolic to aragorn, off their love (or Arwen) Dying.

I hop that makes scence. I can be confusing at times....

That link was helpful! I had thought it shattered before I saw that! In that case, Peter Jackson did a bit of bad editing in the Extended Edition. :P It really does seem to shatter obviously shatter to me in the scene, yet then I was confused because it had only been a dream before.

Then if the Evenstar didn't shatter.... then what happened in the extended plantir scene.

Aragorn sees Arwen, and backs away, dropping the plantir, and the Evenstar(as it show). And the Evenstar shatters... but if it didn't shatter... than what really happened? Because I don't think that scene was also a dream...

Maybe Aragorn just visualized it shattering, like it happened in his dream. Those screenies on that link are pretty convincing. Lol, I remember dropping my replica on the bathroom floor and being afraid to turn around and pick it up for fear it was broken because of that scene! Silly me...

I was watching ROTK last night and during the part where Aragorn is at the Black Gate I saw the Evenstar. It's hard to see because of the pin, but if you look really close you can see the chain.

^It can't have broken though-it's on display on the peleanor fields (or PJ has done some bad editing
I previously thought that the floor that the evenstar "shatters"on was the one in Rohan, but I was wrong :duh: The floor that it supposedly shatters on in both aragorn's dream and the palantir scene, is the same in the Aragorn and the Palantir scene:
http://www.wings-immortal.net/lote/rand ... tir005.jpg and:
http://www.wings-immortal.net/lote/rand ... tir126.jpg
(The images are from Annon nan Galadh btw, except for some reason I couldn't just post the links to images, so I had to upload them to my website :confuzzled:)
Even though it's the same floor, it doesn't mean that it happened-it could have been another symbolic vision. I say this because of the evenstars appearance in the next scene, PJ could easily have edited it out for the EE at least, but he didn't. They've shown before that they don't mind editing out the evenstar necklace as they did so in TTT. (When Aragorn is greeted by Gimli after his fall, PJ said in the EE commentary that when they shot that Aragorn's "tumble off a cliff" and losing evenstar necklacewasn't in the script, so when it changed they had to go back and edit it away.)
So yeah I'm confused! But I sorta think/hope that it didn't break..
Someone write a letter to PJ! :P
I'm glad the link was helpful everyone! :)
