^It's not as simple as that ;)

The eagles aren't commanded by anyone else in Middle-earth. They try to limit the number of times they carry anyone since they're not pack animals. They don't have any sort of alliance with the 'Good' armies except the fact that they're all against the 'Bad' armies. They will fight the Bad armies but they're not doing it for anyone else. Except maybe Gandalf because him and Gwaihir are buddies. But Gwaihir won't even carry Gandalf to far.

Here's something interesting I found on a site:

Quote:
In some of his texts Tolkien speculated that these great Eagles were actually Maiar in bird-shape, as he felt it unlikely Ilúvatar would grant fëa to animals.
If this is true, then Roäc the Raven and the Thrush, who appear in The Hobbit, might also be Maiar or other spirits in animal form (and possibly even Beorn, who sometimes takes the form of a bear).

Well, that may be, but don't you think that the Eagles would have agreed to make an effort to help Frodo, because it meant saving Middle-Earth? They could have flown in the daytime and slept at night, I don't think it would have been too tiring for the Eagles.

Frodo wouldn't have gained experience and knowledge. And it couldn't be done that easily because Frodo was bearing the Ring, which we (and they) all know it's a great evil. The Elves did not want it in their forest, do you really think that the Eagles would carry it? Even if it is with Frodo?

That's a good point, though, again, it is to save Middle-Earth so they could have made some sacrifices.

[a] It wouldn't have made a good or long enough story at all [b] people would still be able to shoot the Eagles out of the sky I'm sure
[c] the Nazgul would probably cause a pretty big problem

End of story.

Here's a quote from http://www.mckellen.com/epost/lotr/050813.htm

Quote:
THE TEN-MINUTE VERSION OF LOTR
Q: I was wondering why, with all the power that gandalf had with the ring, that he couldnt get his good friends the eagles to fly into mordor and drop it into Mt. Doom.

A: Perhaps Gandalf (or at least Tolkien) appreciated that devotion and sacrifice will always outweigh the easy fix.

IMO 5 or so eagles would defeat 9 or so fellbeasts.

As for why the eagles didn't take the ring:

In LOTR or Hobbit it is mentioned that Gwaihir built his home in the inaccessible peaks of the Misty Mountains. If they were inaccessible, then how exactly would they go about asking the eagles for help? Also, the eagles would have been too afraid. Remember in Hobbit when they refused to set Thorin & Co anywhere near the men, as they were afraid of being shot down? I doubt they'd be too keen to go flying over hundreds of thousands of orcs

Excuse me? What--? What's that? IT LOOKS LIKE A NAZGUL/FELL BEAST ATTACKING AN EAGLE (or vice versa...)! DO NOT QUESTION THE STORY!

I don't care what anyone says! THE NAZGUL WOULD HAVE TAKEN THEM OUT! By the time they got to Rivendell and decided to contact these Eagles at their unaccesible eyries (spelling?) they would have caused the flood that wiped out the horses when they were "Black Riders." By then, the Nazgul would have gotten the Fell Beasts.

And does anyone really want the Eagles to have just flown them there?! Not a very interesting story...

Sorry about the capital letters, by the way... I'm not that angry...

Err yeah they were unaccessible, but how the heck can they not realise that the whole of middle-earth was in danger and that there were wars happening on every corner of their world? me=not convinced

I thought about that, and the council of Elrond involved all the races of middle earth that had some connection to the rings of power - dwarves, elves, men and hobbits (because of Bilbo). So I suppose it was never really the responsibility of the Eagles to destroy the ring, though like the ents, they did come and help eventually because they are "part of this world."

I have always wondered that!!! Me and my sister were talking aobut tha a while ago.

And I get that eagles are not controlled by like fluffy said... being such an important misssion you'de think they would have done it. *shrugs*

And I think they could have got in to Mordor because, the only thing Sauron could do at the time was command his army and the army could catch the eagles.

The eagles mention (I think it's in The Hobbit) that they are not very concerned with others' affairs. They likely would have refused had they been asked. They did some small things, such as carrying Gandalf, and did enter into battle. And, it wouldn't have been a good plot. :P
"Take this here!"
"Kay, done, now what?"
"Nothing, the world is saved, that's all."

but Sauron is in the form of an Eye ... that can't shoot fire

We don't know that. We know of the Eye of Sauron, but he may be in another form as well. Tolkien never specifies.

Well I'd have thought the air defence of the Nazgul coupled with being seen by the eye . They were distracted/busy when Aragorn led them to the black gate. Otherwise I'd have thought they wouldn't risk the ring falling into their hands despite any number of Eagles they sent.
