A few days ago I came across this hilarious video "How it should have ended" In the Council of Elrond Gandalf comes up with the plan to send Gwaihir the Windlord with Frodo to destroy the Ring.

i just thought about that.. Why didn't they send Gwaihir? After all the eagles could pick Frodo and Sam up from Mount Doom.

Sorry if this is a stupid question..

The eagles aren't commanded by anyone else in Middle-earth. They try to limit the number of times they carry anyone since they're not pack animals. They don't have any sort of alliance with the 'Good' armies except the fact that they're all against the 'Bad' armies. They will fight the Bad armies but they're not doing it for anyone else. Except maybe Gandalf because him and Gwaihir are buddies. But Gwaihir won't even carry Gandalf to far.

Here's something interesting I found on a site:

Quote:
In some of his texts Tolkien speculated that these great Eagles were actually Maiar in bird-shape, as he felt it unlikely Ilúvatar would grant fëa to animals.
If this is true, then Roäc the Raven and the Thrush, who appear in The Hobbit, might also be Maiar or other spirits in animal form (and possibly even Beorn, who sometimes takes the form of a bear).

Hhmm that makes sense. But still doing that for such an important mission to destroy all evil.. Would that be too much to ask..?

I agree with Haldir o Lórien the eagles arnt controlled by anyone they just come when they come. Plus it wouldent be an interesting story and not very long if tolkien just had the eagles coming and flying over mountdoom and destroying the ring :-D

I don't think even the eagles could have made it into Mordor, don't you think Sauron would have shot fire at them or something? They'd be so painfully obvious.

How is that offensive?

1. That wouldn't be Sauron shooting fire at them, that would be Mount Doom
2. Meldawen is a "she"
3. Sauron has never shot fire
4. You spelled "volcano" wrong

'Kay, scratch the whole shooting fire thing. I dunno. But here's an idea - Frodo has to actually get off an eagle and enter the Cracks of Doom. Since they were so obvious, wouldn't Sauron have orcs there waiting for them?

*Is aware that this is still not a very good reason* I dunno, it wouldn't have been much of a story if they had just used the Eagles. I think that's a pretty good reason in itself.

Well hey, if Sauron is a Maia (sp?) then I'm sure it's possible he could do whatever he wanted too to get rid of eagles! :P
Gandalf didn't send the eagles because that would have been waayy to noticible don't you think? Frodo was sent because of his "unlikiness" to be the Ringbearer.
