I think that you're thinking of the delightfully silly (and v. funny) animation in the humour section of the main A-U site - 'Boromir's Imaginary Phone' where Boromir says that he's watching 'Gandalf's Pointy Hat Trick'.

I don't think that there is an actual 'pointy hat trick', but if I'm wrong, please tell me what it is - I'd just love to know! :P

Gandalf's pointy hat trick was referenced in The Very Secret Diaries, but I dont know if that was where it came from originally.

I've been starting to wonder about that. Is it an actual joke? Or is it just a saying?

Um.......what's BIP?

I saw it first in the Very Secret Diaries also... I think it's just a silly joke. A rather crude joke, at that... but still kind-of funny, in context. :-D

I don't think anyone should worry about not knowing what it is... I think it is better left as a vague idea. And maybe it never was more than that.

When all else fails, Google it.

I found some rather interesting observations, perhaps (as previously mentioned) a little crude for our liking. I've seen the diaries in question and they make about as much sense as everything else on Funny.co.uk. Seriously... no joke...

I'm a positive person so I'll turn it around and draw your attention to a quote from McKellen.com's own E-Post:

Q: I was wondering if you will use some magic and what kind?

A: We devised a few party tricks to entertain the juvenile Hobbits celebrating Bilbo's birthday in the opening scenes of the first film. They involve pulling things out of Gandalf's pointy hat.

There. THAT can be the pointy hat trick. Sleep soundly my friends...

NOTE: The author accepts as little responsibility as possible for the content of this rather useless post.

I think it was probably first written about in The Very Secret Diaries which are really funny by the way. I can guess what it is but don't think I should repeat it here :P

Go with Laivindur of Hollin's suggestion ;)
