See, this is something I didn't really remember from the book. I knew there was a fight and that Gandalf showed up with Erkenbrand. But I didn't remember it as a huge deal, just the last bit before they could get Merry and Pippin. And then the movie came along with it's 40 minutes of battle and 20 minutes of battle preparation. :P Did anyone else feel like this? Or did I just skim that part so it made less of an impact?

I saw the movie before I read the book, so even though I was forewarned about it, I was shocked at how quickly the battle goes by! I'm thankful to Tolkien for it, though, because a battle is very neat to watch on film, but generally boring to read. Most of the time I just don't understand them! (I'm reading War and Peace now, and the entire chapters discussing troop movements completely escape me.) I'm glad Tolkien wrote the battle of Helm's Deep to be straight-forward, interesting, and less than 20 pages long. :)

I also noticed how quickly the battle went in the book, compared with movie. The battle of Helm's Deep was/is one of the best on screen battles of all time.sure,Pelennor Fields might have beat it in epic-ness and sheer scale, but I reckon it was a more memorable battle.

It did go pretty fast in the book vs. the movie. There are times when I wish the chapter was longer, due to a side of me that likes battle strategy and armed forces, but there are a lot more battles to read about. With that said a short read battle is a little nice. :P
I agree with goldelf about the Battle of Helm's Deep in the movie. It probably is one of the best on screen battles.

I just read the Helms Deep chapter the other day & after seeing the portrayal of the battle of Helms Deep on film I was very suprised myself that it was such a short chapter in the book as i was figuring on a long read. But I enjoyed it.

In the movie, the battle of Helms Deep to me showed how great of a job Peter jackson done with those movies. As I thought it was pretty awesome how the movie starts in a beautiful, peaceful & happy place called the Shire & then you find yourself immersed in this dark violent & scary battle at Helms Deep but PJ is able to bring the story all the way back to that peaceful & happy place called the Shire. I see alot of movies & I think that it is rare to se such great storytelling in a movie. It reminded me also of how in real life we go thru the same cycle sometimes as far as everything going great for us & then we find ourselves in a dark place in life from one of a number of bad things that can happen in life, but as we press on it eventually comes back to the good life.

So yes that was huge for me when seeing these movies & I can say without a doubt the impact of the battle of Helms Deep would not have been so great on me if I had read the battle of Helms Deep before i seen the movies.....I still enjoyed the chapter very much & have finally reached the part of the books I have been looking forward to reading since I bought them & that is starting with the chapter "The Taming of Smeagol". I love the character Smeagol/Gollum in the movies & expect to feel the same way in reading about him in the books.

One thing is the detonation bombs. In the book, a slight rumble is felt and a small hole created. In the movie a huge explosion happens. Anyone else notice that?

Yes, I noticed, in the book Aragorn doesn't get caught up in the blast, while in the movie he does!...Thats why I noticed it, lol. I do like how its shorter in the book because, dependin on the way it is written, it could be a long, drug out affair. But seeing it in a movie, it was awesome.

Yeah, pretty intense. I wonder how Sarumaun came up with such an orc-breed?

Well, PJ did that to move the battle along, add some drama, add more tension, yadda yadda yadda. :p :D

Saruman, well, he had orders from Sauron to destroy Rohan, so he needed a new breed of orc to survive the sunlight and stuff. And he's smart so he could figure out this kind of stuff. :p

One thing was strange: the battle description was actually interesting! I was prepared for long dull read because I usually don't like battles. When I was younger I didn't even read it :goofy:

But I love how Gimli and Legolas are counting dead enemies ^^

That was hilarious!! "He was twitching!" "He was twitching because he's got my axe imbedded in his nervous system!" I love it! I also like it when Gimli cant see over the wall, and Legolas asks him if he should describe whats going on to him, or if he should find him a box.

yes, it is in the movie, i got this topic confused with the movie discussion. those lines were funny with the orc count though. I like how Legolas and Gimli played games like that, really showed how far their friendship had grown since they first met. And they made that deal with one another to see the glittering caves and lothlorien together after the war was over, i thought that was awesome.

Yes, I love friendship between Legolas and Gimli, the first pair of elf/dwarf friends from ages :)

I think for Legolas going to glittering caves wasn't that hard but Gimli in Fangorn...that should be a challenge

Battle was epic, even if short ^^ I likereading about battles, in any book. Tolkien makes them most interesting events.

And Gimli and Legolas counting is really funny, glad that they kept it in movie.
