I just recently saw Les Mis and am completely in love with it. The 10th Anniversary concert is available to watch on YouTube, and I can't get enough of it! :) Depressing, but such brilliant music!

@ Taur - Yes, I know what you mean. I think the only thing that really bugs me about them is, and lets just pretend each theatre was massive and could accomodate those huge numbers.....what we see is totally different to the person coughing up dough for seats. :P I mean, how can they see what it looks like at the top of a swirling tower of females? :teehee:

Yes, it's a real pity that the song "Sunday in the Park With George" didn't have the wow factor that the simple "Sunday" does. I have only had my CD a few weeks and it's been a while since I saw the DVD, but now that you mention it, some songs do seem to be a bit out of place or at least do not show the characters in a good light. "Colour and Light" would have been a better way to show George the artist and what he gave of himself to how work, and Dot his lover and what she gave of herself to him. Maybe that's why SS made sure all the characters were properly introduced in Into the Woods. :P Well I think your brother is probably right. I always presumed it was to show th difference between the centuries in how people created art and how they went about getting it displayed. Plus, in someways the resemblance between the two Georges, although I couldn't see that much to be honest. But I agree, 1980's US is a HUGE let down after 19th century Paris. I reckon a modern production of it would make the 1980's look better than it did in the 1980's. :P

LOL! Looking back I am embarrased that I forced my brother to watch me dance and mime along. :duh: That's my only bad memory connected to Cats. Yeah, it was a touring company that I saw as well, I was surprised it was an official one, but it was. We were sat on the front row, with no seats in front of us for quite a few feet, so it was nice and roomy. But what wa even better was the side door to the stage was only a few metres away, and from time to time the cats would leave the stage, go through the door, and prowl along my row, singing and meowing and it was just awesome to see the costumes and the make-up so close up. Although not so good seeing all the sweatiness. XD

Hmm... I actually thought voice wise, Nixon did sound like Hepburn. At least, she convinced me anyway. :P I would have LOVED to have heard Jeremy sing, why did they dub him?! Ah, but I guess you could say as he was a singer, he would have more of an idea about breath control than Audrey, and I'm not so sure anyone would have coached her on how to make her breathing look realistic. I think Rex Harrison on stage would have been wonderful, I think he just overdid it on the film for me. The more I see and hear him, the more I think he's just a bit OTT and loud. But then again, I have also seen other stage-to-movie performers be a little bit too much as well but... his voice just grates with me now. :teehee:

@ Larael - I agree, excellent musically, but so bloody depressing. :P

CATS!!! Yes, Cats... after reading your posts I re-connected with my Cats-fandom and have spent a couple of hours on YouTube and surfing Cats-fansites. Like for many of you guys Cats was also the first professional live show I saw that blew me away. I had seen shows like My Fair Lady and Fame on stage and tv and I had been in a school production of Grease but Cats was the first show I saw - that left and impression. It was so unusual and awesome and I had no idea what the story was or what they were doing on stage but their dances and songs were AWESOME!
Later on I got the VHS (yes, before the time of the DVD!) and watched it over and over again. O to be a Jellicle cat!! My username for a long time was either Demeter or Elektra.. I think Demeter is my favorite along with Rumpleteazer and Bombalurina (she rocks Macavity!)... and Mr. Mistoffelees is simply adorable!!
But seriously, how can they sing like they do while they dance like they do? No wonder they've got to be sweaty!!

I have that VHS!! Or I did, I ruined it by watching it too much. :P And I ruined the taped from TV version I had before that, so now I have the DVD which is currently safe and not abused. :teehee:

Skimbleshanks and Mistofflees were my favourites. :D

"You would play no pranks with Skimbleshanks he's a cat that cannot be ignored, so that nothing went wrong on the Northern Mail when Skimbleshanks was aboard"

Oh, God I remember visiting every Cat fansite I could find. :-o Long time ago.

Wow. I feel like such an outsider. I say that because I have never seen Cats. So it was obviously not my first introduction into the world of performed musicals.

I honestly couldn't tell you what was the first musical production that I ever saw. :P Musicals and theatre productions in general have always been something I've been interested in. :P I think the fact that I was in a musical every year since I was 6 until I was 20, is probably the main reason I love them. :P (This does NOT mean I can sing, farthest thing from it, actually - just means I was involved in one way or another; if I had any speaking roles, it was speaking, not singing ;))

I will say this, though, and that is there is one production that I have seen performed that secured my love for all things musical and theatrical forever and ever. (One that I SHAMEFULLY forgot to mention in my list of favourites :duh:)

"Pirates Of Penzance" :notworthy:

"I Am The Very Model of A Very Modern Major-General" has got to be the most impressive song I've ever seen performed. :P

If any of you have not seen this, and have the opportunity to, TAKE IT. Oh my god, it's so brilliant.

I think Nurr mentioned "Newsies." How I failed to mention that one is waaay beyond me. LOOOOOOVE. Even if purely for the simple fact that Christian Bale is in it. But that doesn't mean I don't still love it completely.

"Wicked" I have yet to see. But I'd love to. I think it was my senior year of highschool, but a group of students in drama had gone to New York in the summer and saw "Wicked," and by the end of the first month of school, every single drama student knew every word to every song.

JFISHNESS NOT liking Rex Harrison??? *is mind boggled* I have adored that man for as long as I can remember. To me, he IS Henry Higgins. I've never heard Audrey's vocals in MFL, but I've wanted to, just to know what it sounded like.

And the fact that it's somebody else singing for Audrey is the one thing that has always irked me about the film. Meh.

I know. I am alone in my RH like/dislike thing. Maybe it's because I am British and I have seen him in a lot of films playing the same kind of British snob that by the time I saw MFL.. 'twas enough.

What got me about MFL is I thought her performance was Oscar nominee worthy.... Julie Andrews was snubbed for role.... wins Oscar same year for different film... no Audrey nominee. CONSPIRACY! I always thought it was because Audrey was dubbed so she couldn't be nominated as it wasn't all her..... surprise surprise another actress in a musical was dubbed (can't remember the name of the actress or film) and SHE was nominated. JF's theory - CONSPIRACY!

I liked Audrey's vocals. As I said, it sounded more natural and less flower-girl-got-lungs-hidden-talent. I love her rendition of "Moon River" in Breakfast At Tiffany's so at least the world got to hear her anyway.

I have heard the Major General song - awesome.

GO WATCH CATS ON YOUTUBE!

I still got a VHS... our VHS player broke some time after I got it .... perhaps after having played Cats too many times.. ;) and we never got another one.. Alas, I didn't get the dvd with Cats either... I really ought to get it again!

MoBo:: Yes, you must watch Cats, the songs are great and the choreography divine!! I'll watch the Pirates from ..whatwasitagain? :teehee:

Another musical obsession of mine: Jesus Christ Superstar! Preferably the 2000 version.. I loove that French guy (or is he French/Canadian?) Jerome Pradon... his voice is perfect for Judas. Sometimes I think I'm in love with that voice!! (By the way, he was Aragorn in the LotR musical too) Actually all the lead vocals are beautiful and strong. And I like the interpretation and performance of the songs.
The 1973 movie version was cool too... sooo much great choreography!!! :-)

Can you even buy a video recorder? We've got 4 and God help us when they stop working.

I saw the film version.... it was OK. It didn't really bother me that it was people dressed in very 70's clothing re-enacting the last days of Jesus... and the music generally was good, I don't think the lyrics were anything really great. If that was my first introduction to Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice, I would have been disappointed. Although I do like the title number. And the guy who played Pilate reminds me of Snape, a singing Snape. :teehee: So gotta love him. :P

 I never got into Cats. Something about people dressing up as cats, and running around...I just couldn't handle it. Maybe I'd do better now, but I dunno.

I think my first forays into true musicals were My Fair Lady and Sound of Music. Those are the ones I remember really early on, so I always have a soft spot for them. I believe JF has heard my opinion on Rex Harrison many a time ;) but I adore him as Higgins. I was not a big fan early on, but the more times I see it the more my love grows. And I just love Julie and Audrey to bits.

So, I watched a movie with Janet Leigh the other day, and it got me thinking of My Sister Eileen? Has anyone else seen it? It's cute, with Jack Lemmon and Betty Garrett, but the hands down best thing about it is the dancing. Because Bob Fosse and Tommy Rall have a dance off to get the girl. It's fantastic.

Nah.. I think song AND dance/choreography is what draws me into a musical more so than anything else. That's why I liked Jesus Christ Superstar and why Cats blew me away.
Nurr:: I think I might be like .. people who start singing out their feelings and emotions.. hmm... nah.. doesn't do anything special to me.. but take people dressing up as cats and you get me all excited!! :P Although... I admit Lion King didn't do the same for me... even though the choreography and costumes were beautiful... It was the dancing in Cats!! :)

I always thought Cats was universally liked... thanks to AU that's put paid to that idea.

^ That's a good point Ea. If you think about it, there are definitely different types of musicals and some people might not like them all. Different types, more complicated than say dark or comedy.

There are those were people sing all the time, and there are hardly any "conversations", those were people suddenly burst into song but there is little dancing, ditto the above but with dancing. Those that have singing and dancing and it seems natural sort of, because it all happens in the context of making a show, or at least all the characters can actually sing and dance as they do so for a living. Not that that is any excuse for them to start singing when they go out and buy a banana. :P Then there are the ones that are really story driven, and the songs just complement, but are still the stars, and then there are the ones were dancing and music are the main features.

Needless to say, I like them all. :P Right from the OTT extravaganzas of the 30's, to the routine stories of the 40's, th bigger dances of the 50's and then onwards.

I have only two film categories where I will watch pretty much everything; westerns and musicals. :teehee:

Yeah, I can easily see why Cats wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea and I'm sure I would be a lot more bemused than amazed to see productions that weren't professional. Simply because the actors must to be talented dancers wearing professionally made costumes and settings to make a believeable illusion that we're actually seeing cats dancing and singing before our eyes and not just actors with cotton tails and bodypaint.

And like I said my fascination with musicals has a lot to do with choreography - being a petty dancer-wannabe myself. :teehee: Other than that I'm attracted to a great story, funny plot/characters and epic songs.. so the usual ingredients in any of the big musicals!

Did anyone mention The Rocky Horror Picture Show?? I have only seen it on a lousy, grainy YouTube version but I'm determined to like it... so many good songs, quirky characters, obscure plot and extravagant costumes!

Grease is a classic too. I love the movie and I've seen a professional production too... and we did Grease as a school musical. As long as you find some decent singers it difficult to mess it up... it has so much good energy. :)

Oh God yes! I can see why someone might not like Cats if they had seen a bad amateur production only or something. Cats has got to be done by skilled dancers and set designers.

My ingredients for film musicals is usually the cast (do I like them are they good singers/dancers), the director (what other musicals/films has he done?) and then who wrote the music songs. Broadway shows I have tended to wander into mainly if they had a film made of it, a film actor/actress who I like was in it or do I just want to see what all the fuss is about. :P But as I kep saying :teehee: basically if it's a film musical I will watch it.

I haven't seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show although I know of it and some of the songs. LET'S DO THE TIMEWARP AGAIN!!

Grease I shouldn't like. American high school musical *run away* It's not my favourite but it does have some great songs and dances and I like the characters which is a surprise really considering what a rag-tag mob they are. :P

Current musical I am watching is Funny Face with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn. Haven't seen it for a long time and so far, it's making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Plus it is full of 50's fashion :swoon: and Audrey is going to be looking gorgeous in the next few scenes I can tell.

Anyone here familiar with Bob Fosse (that isn't Nurr :P). I saw Sweet Charity last year which not only changed my opinion of Shirley Maclaine who I never really liked, but really made me understand all the fuss about him.

Two of my favourite scenes are on Youtube so here you go. The dancing in the first one is INSANE but GLORIOUS! And all hail Sammy Davis Jr, that's all I can say. Oh and the third one is a scene from the show Fosse, which is all about his work. This clip is from the Tony Awards a few years back. Lost count of how many times I have watched this on my DVD. :P

Oh, I absolutely have to add another one to my list because I have no idea how I was unaware of this show before, and it's absolutely...gorgeous.

Bare.

Just oh my gosh. It's a pretty controversial show, because there's homosexuality and bisexuality and drug use and several other things. However, the story is wonderful, and the music is gorgeous. Seriously, just listen to this song. It's not one of the more impressive songs, but I just think it's hauntingly sweet.

I get to go see Man of La Mancha on Sunday! :D

So, speaking of Bob Fosse. Have I shared this yet? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ItaESaGWMk
I just love it. Bob Fosse and Tommy Rall.

Aww, I love Funny Face. It's so cute. You know, I've never been a Shirley Maclaine fan either. I may have to check that movie out.

Yay I really like Man of La Mancha. Gotta have a good lead singer for that though, who you like otherwise it's ruined.

You've never seen it!!?? *excuse me a jawdrop*

:jawdrop:

It's like... his biggest movie.. his most famous Broadway-show-gets-made-into-film-and-he-has-major-input. :-o You gotta watch those clips and get a taste of it.

NO YOU'VE NEVER POSTED THAT! AWESOME!

That was some incredible dancing, with some very typical Fosse style. I've never seen him dance much really, and how nice to see Tommy Rall. I love his work that I've seen so far. The shot lengths are fantastic as well. Almost 2 minutes with a cut. :swoon: I know Fosse became a real schmuck in later life, but he could really dance and choreograph.
