I voted "no." As I've said before, I feel we should combine the LotR forums.

One suggestion:
Book Discussion
The Lord of the Rings
The Hobbit
The Silmarillion
Miscellaneous

Movie Discussion
The Lord of the Rings
The Hobbit
Miscellaneous

Another option:
Lord of the Rings
Fellowship of the Rings (Book & Movie)
The Two Towers (Book & Movie)
Return of the King (Book & Movie)

The Hobbit
Book
Movies

Or, another way to do it:
Tolkien Discussion
The Lord of the Rings (Books & Movies)
The Hobbit (Book & Movies)
Other Tolkien Books
Miscellaneous Books and Movies

My reasoning is that by combining the LotR forums in some way or another we can concentrate the activity and hopefully increase traffic. :)

Everything else looks okay, although I think there was talk of perhaps adding a subforum for gaming?

AH! I see what you mean now about combining the LOTR forums... I don't know what I thought you meant actually but it looks good how you've shown it. :P

It would look a LOT neater, but my concern is it would still look like a forum with LOTR content rather than a LOTR forum with other content.

I definitely wouldn't want to books/movies combined together though. But I can see the benefit of having FOTR/TTT/ROTK all in one group, despite there being less LOTR sub forums visible.

Yep, I think a gaming forum would be the fair thing to do.

I agree that an entire gaming subform would be good, as there are gamers on here.

Oh, I understand now, Taur! I definitely like the first and second options, but like JF I'd rather keep the films separate from the books.

It looks pretty decent to me. I do have a few suggestions though. Just thoughts:

1. Turn the "Silmarillion" board, into "Other LotR-Related Books"

2. Move threads from the "Miscellaneous Book Discussion" into "What You're Reading" and delete that board.

3. Same thing with "Miscellaneous Movie Discussion", move all threads (or active ones) into the "What You're Watching" board.

4. Perhaps the removal of the "New Characters" board? Usually RPers post their character bios at the beginning of each new RP, even if it's a continuation of another.

5. Perhaps we can have a single board for LotR actors, and then have combine "Miscellaneous Actor Discussion" and "Non-LotR Actor Discussion" into one board. Aren't they basically the same thing?

6. And the removal of "Other LotR Related Movies", "The Actor's Movies", "Signatures and Avatars", and perhaps "Polling"?

But yeah. It looks good otherwise. I think that streamlining those few boards into just one will really help. It's pretty cluttered right now, plus with the addition of the Hobbit boards, it'll look busy.

So this is what the new forum would look like (new or combined boards are italicized, and I completely removed boards I think should be taken out or combined)

I quite like Darky's suggestion, only with an addition of a gaming board for those who are into that sort of thing :)

And, maybe this is just a stupid suggestion from one who doesn't really make any kind of fan art, but couldn't Fan Art and Fanfiction & Poetry be combined into one? I mean, it's all just different forms of art, isn't it?

I voted no, because I prefere the comprized version of Taur/Darkeh

- the only thing I´d like to add, would be a thread called something like
Thoughts of Tolkien, maybe book related?

other than that, I love the way it looks!

Sorry, I didn't realize I was so unclear before. :P I think what I suggested back in the Revival threads was basically the second option, though even I didn't really have a clear idea of how they could be combined. Personally, I favor my first suggestion. I like the idea of one LotR subforum, instead of three for FotR, TTT, and RotK (like we have now, and like in my second suggestion). After all, Tolkien always said he thought of them as one big work, and I think it's clear that when we talk about The Council of Elrond we're talking about FotR and when we talk about the Scouring of the Shire we're talking about RotK, and there's no need to keep them in separate forums. :)

Also, under the "There's only so long you can..." theory, I think we should think about getting rid of the LotR Soundtrack forum. I adore the soundtrack to distraction, but there's only so long you can swoon over "May It Be." ;) In fact, I'd consider shaking up that whole section... getting rid of the "Soundtracks" and "LotR Gaming" subforums and maybe starting a new "LotR Products & Events" subforum or something that would include things like the soundtracks, games, Weta, Comic-con, and such. I also quite like Zandain's idea of a purely-Tolkien board; we could possibly take the "Languages" board and expand it to a "Tolkien" board that includes not only his languages, but his life and philosophies.

Gimli wrote:

I thought of that, too, but I think whether we like it or not, we already do have less LotR content than other content. (Which is sort of how it should be, right? There is more to discuss about life than there is to discuss about LotR, though myself from 7 years ago would be shocked to hear it. :teehee:) Besides, with the website being called Arwen-Undomiel.com and 90% of us having elvish usernames (and names taken from LotR characters :sly:), I don't think we're really in so much danger of loosing our LotRiness as it may seem. :P

@ Darky... I'm not sure I totally agree with what you laid out. I really like what you did with the Actors' Board, but I don't get why you would move "Misc. LotR Movie Discussion" and "Misc. LotR Book Discussion" into the regular "Movies & TV" and "Literature" forums.
I agree with your general sentiment of streamlining, though. :)

@ Ana... I don't think that would be a bad idea! I never use the Fanfiction & Poetry board myself, so maybe I'm not the best person to say, either, but I think it's worth considering.

Hm... this is getting kinda complicated.

We don't need Other LOTR Movie discussion as those discussions are few and far between especially now with the Hobbit having it's own board. However, we do still need a Misc Movie Dicussion, because there are things there that really won't fit anywhere else, and if you put all those threads into TV & Movies... messy.

I think Misc LOTR Books would serve as both other LOTR books and Misc together. Again, if you put exisiting threads from those 2 boards into Literature, it will look messy.

Sooo... why do we need Misc LOTR discussion as well? If we have a Misc Book discussion & a Misc Movie discussion... do we need another Misc? Won't they fit in either or?

I don't think we need a LOTR gaming thread... if we get the gaming board those threads can go into there without it looking to messy.

Mirkwood (The Swoon Board)
Caradhras (Miscellaneous Actor Discussion) {Includes "Miscellaneous Actor Discussion" and "Non-LotR Actor Discussion"}
Dol Guldur (LotR & Hobbit Actor Discussion)

^ That looks good Darky. But if we have a discussion thread for non and LOTR actors alike... do we need a swoon board really?

Combining graphic art and poetry into one forum will look incredibly messy and things will soon get lost and people will find it diffucult to look and comment etc.

EDIT: @ Taur

I agree with you on the soundtracks... but there are fans out there... maybe a simply sticky thread right at the top in the music forum would be good?

A Tolkien board sounds good... you could discuss all sorts there... maybe that good be instead of the "Misc Book discussion" and while you could talk about misc book stuff... a lot of things can be included in that.

AHAHH! I get it now, i didn't realize that the Misc. Movie and Books discussion was LotR-related. My bad.

I'm personally a fan of keeping the three sections seperated, I think it would get too cluttered by combining all three works into one section.

So this a little better (going off of my last proposal, with new changes explained at the bottom) :

Announcements
The Halls of Mandos (Announcements) + The Tower of Ecthelion (Member Awards)

Introductions
The Prancing Pony (Introduce Yourself)

Book Discussion
Bag End (The Fellowship of the Ring)
Helm’s Deep (The Two Towers)
Minas Tirith (The Return of the King)
* (The Hobbit)
Doriath (Other LotR-Related Book Discussion)

Movie Discussion
Bagshot Row (The Fellowship of the Ring)
Ithillien (The Two Towers)
Mount Doom (The Return of the King)
* (The Hobbit)

Miscellaneous LotR Discussion
The Grey Havens (Soundtrack Discussion)
The Party Field (LotR Gaming)
Imladris (Languages)
The Misty Mountains (Completely Miscellaneous LotR)

RPG & Gaming
Caras Galadhon (LotR RPG)
Sharky’s End (Non-LotR RPG)
Osgiliath (Help and Ideas)
BDLDOPADOADN (LotR and Non-LotR Related Gaming)

The Actors
Caradhras (Miscellaneous Actor Discussion) {Includes "Miscellaneous Actor Discussion" and "Non-LotR Actor Discussion" and "Swoon Board"}
Dol Guldur (LotR & Hobbit Actor Discussion)

Life Outside LotR
Mirrormere (Movies & TV)
Michel Delving (Literature)
The Golden Hall (Music)
The Green Dragon (Your Life)
House of Bombadil (Miscellaneous Randomness)

World Wide Web
Dwarrowdelf (Favourite Tolkien Sites)
Haradwaith (Favorite Non-LotR Sites)
Bree-land (Your Site)
Amon Hen (Site Help)
Orthanc (Resources and Tutorials)

Fan Section
Bucklebury (Fan Art)
The Hall of Fire (Fanfiction & Poetry)
Numenor (Requests)
Dale (Resources & Tutorials)

Other
The Glittering Caves (Clubs)
The Old Forest (Contests)
Dwimorberg (Suggestions and Comments)

Changed RPG to RPG and Gaming, fixed Misc. LotR Book and Movie discussion, moved Swoon Board to Misc. actor discussion

Little better?

I'm with JF on this one. The Fan Art section can be a bit overwhelming at times already, especially during things like the graphics cookoffs. Trying to combine it with writings would just make things way too confusing.

I like your second suggestion, Darky, but I don't understand why we should keep The Grey Havens (Soundtrack Discussion) or The Party Field (LotR Gaming), considering we're putting a gaming board in the RPG section.

Also, we should probably discuss some ideas for names for The Hobbit film and movie subforums. Actually the Misc LotR Discussion forum itself seems kind of bunk . . . [I like what you did with The Actors forum though. :)]

True, although I think The Hobbit names should be a little more Hobbit-y related. What about The Lonely Mountain and Beorn's House? Those seem to be the only two "new" places in The Hobbit?

Bumpity bump bump. Okay, let's get this sorted. Is there a finalized list of how you guys want to rearrange the forum? We know Ellie wants a video game section (it must be important, if he came back from his hiatus to tell us so :teehee: ), and we know you wanted a Hobbit movie section (which is done, and I find it kind of funny that I named it "The Lonely Mountain" without seeing Larael's post above :-P), and I see Darkeh's latest revision to the boards...but I don't know if that was agreed upon, or if people had any changes to add.

The only thing I have to add to the discussion (because really, this isn't something I'm super invested in... will make any changes you guys agree upon) is that looking at the index page of the forum can be extremely overwhelming. Any opinions on whether we should make it so we only have links to overarching categories on the index page which you have to click on to get to the sub-boards? If you look at the Board Index >> Announcements >> A-U Revival 2011 link thingy and click on Announcements, you see all the subcategories, which is how it would be. Sure, it's another step in checking specific boards, but it would make the index page cleaner. Thoughts?
