It's pretty cool you meet him at Sarn Ford. You can actually see the Shire across the river.

Really don't like him (especially since he hurt poor Faramir) but when you read his backstory (about the palantir and all) you have to feel a little sorry for him. I love Faramir, Eowyn, Pippim, Sam, Gandalf, Eomer...the list goes ever on and on

Probably Faramir. He's one of the few Men who actually resisted the Ring and he says that he doesn't like to fight, which is my number one thing when considering the character of any guy. Also, he's just a really nice guy, who 1) takes everyone seriously 2) never changes drastically 3) is sweet, caring, and polite to everyone he meets and 4) is very unassuming. I love that he is totally fine without power. It's so unlike, well, just about every other Man in the whole trilogy!

I always admired Faramir for those things. He is kind of like Sam. He is just trying to do his best and has a pure heart.
I do Like Aragorn better than him a bit, basically just because of his backstory and his role in the movie but I have always wished that Faramir had a larger role.

Sam has always been the character that I have admired most in the books.
Aragorn is warrior born and trained from childhood to defend the realm he is fated to reclaim with his sword arm. Boromir is commander of the armies of Gondor; his brother, captain of the Gondorian Rangers: both trained from childhood to wield swords and other weapons. But Sam: why he is a humble gardener who, despite his lack of training, is able to rise the occasion and become a warrior when forced to do so.
IMHO, Sam epitomises the commoner, the person who shows amazing forbearance in situations totally beyond his imaging. More than any other character, I believe Sam is Tolkien's tribute to the common soldiers he served with in the trenches during WWI. Conscripted and sent into a horrific situation with little prospect of survival, they stayed true to their oaths to serve country and kin.
Also, unlike the other members of the Fellowship, Sam does not choose to go on the quest. He more or less gets dragooned into going by Gandalf, as punishment for listening in on a private conversation. Yet, there he is at the end, carrying Frodo up the side of Mt. Doom: never flagging in his love for Frodo; and never forsaking his promise to Gandalf to stay with Frodo come what may.

Yeah, I totally agree! I had never thought about the soldiers in the trenches thing, but that is very insightful! Sam is a close second to Faramir: Faramir is a 10, Sam is a 9.9999999999.....

Completely agree too. I have always admired Sam. He has such a pure motive for his actions.
