Elfqueen is right! A lot of people seem to be discussing the movie version of the characters, not the book versions. My favourite character would definitely be Smaug. Because dragons.

Gandalf is pretty cool. No arguing with that. I like how you put that he sees value where others do not. I had not thought about it in that way but it's quite true.

Thank you, but thats Tolkien, not me. But i do agree that a great man (or wizard) can be great only if he has respect for others, even if they seem inferior.

Yes, I like Gandalf to. But there are so many interesting characters, it is hard to choose a favourite.

Indeed.
Honestly in most movies I don't have too hard a time picking my favorite. Granted I do like Aragorn's character best it is much harder to me in LOTR than other movies because like Thenidiël mentioned... there are so many interesting characters.
I love gimli and Boromir, faramier, and several others like Haldir, (Though I don't think he was in the book, for sure not at helms deep) Memory is sketchy on that.
I think that is one of the things that makes the LOTR so great....There are so many great characters that anyone is bound to find one or several they identify with very well.

Exactly. We can find a little hobbit inside us, but also a dwarf, an elf or a man...or even something dark.

Galadriel does not appear in The Hobbit the book (like a lot of other JRRT characters from LoTR, and never mind Tauriel!). There is a films forum here too … (bleeping photobucket! )

After re-visiting the book I honestly find the character(s) of the wolves in the hobbit. Even though they are on the "bad" side I found them fascinating. I wish the movie would have kept them more like the book.

As Gandalf in The Hobbit is not quite Gandalf in LoTR, I would go with Bard the bowman.

I like Bard as well even though he "offs" Smauggie.
