For all those who would love to learn elvish (Sindarin) but just don't have the time for intense study, MrSkinny21 and I have decided to start this thread where we can learn phrases at a reasonable pace.

Eventually we hope to be able to learn enough and incorporate it into conversations, writing, and paragraphs if possible. We will all be learning together so feel free to join in!

Hey, guys, welcome to to our thread :) This is meant for all those who want to start learning sindarin elvish.
First we are gonna start with some simple phrases... For example:

I eneth nin LĂndal!

This translates to My name (is) Lindal. In this case, the verb "is" (to be) is left out, due to the complicity of it's usage.

Jax Nova, you correct me if i'm wrong :)

Correct to my resources.

Is there a word for word translation on this one?

Example: I eneth nin _____
My name is _____

Since IS is left out why the three words before the name?

I think the intended words are: the article "the", then the noun "name", followed here by the genitive pronoun "my".

This sort of thing can be fairly idiomatic however, so I'm not sure we really know how an Elf would say this in Sindarin. Look at German for instance, in which there are at least two ways to express this, that I'm aware of; or dive into what wa is doing in one of the ways to say this in Japanese...

... watashi wa (name) desu...

And see how interesting it can get :)

Lol Oh my.... Elthir I am going to have to stick with the Sindarin... If I get into German or Japanese I'll be hopeless. :P

So basically the most likely option you think is probably,

E Jax Eneth Nin

as opposed to...

E Eneth Nin Jax

For clarity I'm not really choosing a way, I was just trying to make a side point about idiomatic phrases or expressions. And I'm not trying to discourage anyone by doing this, so please don't be. I realize that the person who wants to say something in Elvish can only work with what we have so far, but I just think that it's not a bad idea for people to keep something like this in the back of their minds, at least, as they try to work out ways to say X or Y based on the Elvish found in the (sometimes confusing) linguistic corpus.

Not that you don't already, but just to note it for the thread.

In any case, do carry on! And have fun!

The little I have dabbled in Tolkien's languages has been both fun and rewarding, and for me has opened up new interest in other Primary World languages.

:)
