The extended vesions are great! I have all three of them but I have not been able to watch ROTK EE yet. I plan to do that soon.

They extend Boromir's death scene a little.*starts to cry just thinking about it* Anyway  I liked The Passing of the Elves scene. The song was so beautiful. The extended versions totally rock!

I urge you to get them! (Aragorn gets to Sing! :D)

The extra footage in the movies were worth getting the extended editions.

The pinnicle of my Lord of the Rings movie experience was Trilogy Tuesday when I saw the Fellowship and Two Towers extended editions in the theater, then saw the premiere of Return of the King at Midnight!

I think the extended version is amazing! The new scene are great! And all the extras, oh my gosh... it is so cool!! After this, you know really (or almost) everything.. there are also some fun parts in the, let me call it, making off (aragorns kissing scene :-D )
I loved it so much, that I bought it again, when I came here in the us, because my german ones don't work here, but I couldn't live without them, so I spend the money twice on them!! They are absolutly great..!!

I LOVE the extended editions! I just actually got all three of them a few weeks ago (Christmas pressie to myself :D) and they came packaged in a really nice slip case.

I have watched all three of them! Haven't watched the appendices yet (will soon!). The new and extended scenes are wonderful! You do get more to the story with them. Sure, maybe not entirely everything, but you do see more.
They did extend Boromir's death scene (UGH! Tears my heart out :( ) and there are a few other ones that are really amazing. The Passing of the Elves is a favorite (love the song they sing there!) and they also extended the opening scenes in the Shire and Bilbo's party.

I totally recommend them. You will LOVE them!

That's how one of my friends were, so, just like you, I forced her to watch all three EE. Considering it was my first time watching EE's, it was exciting to me... I would shout, "NEW PART!!!" whenever an added scene came up...

Sadly, that was the only time I have watched the EE's, so I can't remember much of the extended scenes, :( but, hopefully, I will watch them again soon.

I have to say that the EE DVD of Fellowship is the best of all these movies!

^ It really adds to the beginning of the whole trilogy. I especially like the scene with Galardiel's Gifts.

Another favourite scene of mine from the extended editions is in RotK - Paths of the Dead. It was fun to see Gimli hopping through waves of skulls. :P

Agreed. Love the extended editions. My sisters and I always say once you see them you can't go back to the theatrical editions because you feel like you are missing so much.

It’s been a while since I’ve watched my LoTR DVDs (and yes, I would no longer watch the cinematic versions, only the EEs), so memory is no longer fresh. But my overall impression (and most strongly for Fellowship) is that the EEs were PJ’s nod to the serious book fans, including details which he thought would bog down the action in the cinematic versions.

Not surprisingly, even in the FoTR EE PJ did not find room for Tom Bombadil. In my very unrepresentative experience with comments from people who broke off their reading of the book(s), and others who managed to “wade through” some parts to get to the point where thing started getting more interesting, TB was a major obstacle. Even in the book, he has aspects of comic relief about him (which in the movies PJ loaded down the Gimli character with), but in one aspect he appears to be the most powerful being in Middle-earth except for Sauron (or possibly even not excepting him): he is totally immune to the effects of the One Ring. Totally hopeless in a movie setting.

Barring a satirical movie version of LoTR (something perhaps along the lines of what Mad Magazine sometimes did to movies – I vaguely remember hilarious takes on “Rocky” and “Godfather II”) TB is unlikely to show up on screens of any size.
