I re-read this chapter recently as research for an RP I'm in on another board, and the ending actually made me tear up!

^ I agree with you glorfindil.

That chapter is very touching and well written. It does the same to me.

Yes it is. I was inspired to write the 2nd part of Recollections of a Dunedain Ranger after reading this chapter one night. Its one I come back to read on its own every now and then.

I agree. Its a very moving chapter. I become so absorbed whenever I read it. Tolkien is just amazing that way.

I guess what gets me about this chapter is the last bit were the dead are mentioned. The way that the deeds are spoken about of a few mentioned, and the mention that there were many that fell.... it saddens me every time I read it. Kinda like when I read of world war 1 and the fallen at Fromelles and Argonne.... having relatives affected by these battles really kind of brings it home when I read of Halbarad not ever returning north to his family....

Yeah, throughout that whole chapter I was so invested. What with Eowyn's defeat of the witch king, Theoden's death, Eomer's reaction to Eowyn being there, and the list of the dead at the end. Oh man. I was basically in tears the whole time. Good sad tears.

Yes, Battle of the Pelennor Field is one of the most gripping battle chapters along with Helms Deep. I always cry a bit when reading the part of the deaths at the end of the chapter. :'-(

Just guessing – perhaps the chapter that was most influenced by JRRT’s personal experience of the utter carnage of the Battle of the Somme, the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front and one of the bloodiest battles in human history?

Agreed! That definitely influenced the way he wrote all the battle chapters.
